RHA officer quits to pursue goals

For the second time this month, the Residence Halls Association is losing a member of its executive board.History junior Charles Russman announced his decision to withdraw from the position of director of public relations and advertising Monday to RHA president Tim Liss.The resignation will become official on Friday, but RHA officials will open up the position tonight at the organization’s general assembly meeting.Russman said being in RHA was no longer a top priority for him.“I want to put more time and effort in school work and being a mentor,” he said.“I just don’t have enough time to take 20 credits, be a mentor and continue to do a good job at the position.”Russman handled RHA’s publicity and advertising and was the media contact and official spokesman for the organization.

Voters to decide on straight-party proposal

Michiganians looking to vote a straight-party ticket could be in for a surprise when they enter the voting booth next year.A proposal on November’s ballot asks voters to decide whether to continue the 110-year-old tradition of allowing people to choose all candidates of a single party with one swift ballot punch.

Workshops offered about kids, parents

Free workshops for the Parenting Education Series begin today with a seminar called “The ABC’s of Discipline at Work.” MSU Child and Family Care Resources program and the Women’s Resource Center sponsored the series. The two-part workshop will be presented by Paul Van Kleek, from the office of Program and Professional Services.

U Museum receives merit award

The MSU Museum will be honored with a prestigious award this weekend. The museum’s “The FairTime Project,” which began in 1995, will receive an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History on Friday.

Alcohol likely to blame in drowning

Alcohol is likely to blame for the death of Allegan resident Timothy Walters this weekend at an East Lansing hotel, police said.On Sunday, another hotel guest found Walters, 25, face down in the hot tub of Hampton Inn, 2500 Coolidge Road.

Lansing - Six-year-old Carla Jones furrowed her brow as she concentrated on the gumdrop-and-toothpick molecule in her hands. “I like these stick things,” she said, holding up a mangled oxygen molecule. But her favorite activity at the Impression 5 Science Center’s Super Saturday was making giant bubbles. “I made big ol’ circles,” she said, stretching her arms as wide as she could.

Student charged with possession of drugs

An MSU student was arraigned Friday for possession of GBL, a derivative of GHB, known as the “date rape” drug, Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III said. Finance sophomore William Barrett Brown, 19, was arrested by Lansing police Thursday after a search conducted by the Tri-County Metro Narcotics Squad and other agencies allegedly found a standard-sized wine bottle amount of GBL, or gamma-butyrolactone, in Brown’s Lansing home, Dunnings said. One dose of GHB, or gamma-hydroxybutyrate, is the size of a pop bottle cap. The student’s residence was searched after police agencies were informed that a package containing GBL was sent to Brown through an Internet transaction, officials said. Distribution of GBL is a felony and those convicted face a maximum of seven years in prison.

MSU’s undergraduate student government is still working out the kinks of having new representatives in its assemblies - something that happens every year, ASMSU officials said.ASMSU Student Assembly vice-chairperson for internal affairs Missy Kushlak presented a short lesson on the basics of Robert’s Rules of Order at the first assembly meeting of the year for new representatives.
