By working with community groups and cracking down on traffic violations, MSU police earned the 2008 Excellence in Traffic Safety Award from the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, or MACP.

New Lamprey control method

Star-crossed sea lampreys might soon have a serious case of heartbreak. Researchers Weiming Li and Nicholas Johnson and their team have found a way to synthesize the pheromone, or chemical, that attracts female lampreys to male lampreys. They hope to use it to lure the females into traps to help control the lamprey population, Johnson said.

Campus safety concerns students, officers after 2 assaults

Two sexual assaults in two days are causing concern among law enforcement officers and students as police search for suspects in the crimes. After a student reported being sexually assaulted Tuesday afternoon while walking along Hagadorn Road near Hubbard Hall, another assault was reported to MSU police Wednesday, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

MSU cautions by pulling peanut butter from campus

An important part of Rosetta Sloan’s diet has disappeared from MSU cafeterias. Sloan, who avoids eating meat when possible, is searching for other sources of protein this week after the university pulled peanut butter products in precaution of a nationwide salmonella outbreak.

E.L. Society shows ‘Frozen River’

The East Lansing Film Society Film Series will show the film “Frozen River” from 4-7:30 p.m. Feb. 4 at the Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road, and at 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. Feb. 6-8 at Wells Hall. Admission is $7 for the public and $3 for students.

Students across campus observe inauguration

Just because Fletcher Daniels wasn’t in Washington, D.C., doesn’t mean he wasn’t emotionally moved by President Barack Obama’s first words as the 44th president. As the chemistry senior joined about 300 others at the Union Ballroom to watch the historic inauguration, Daniels said he was overwhelmed with emotion.

Clothing store to open on Grand River

Not many people would open a campus-related clothing store in the same location where a national chain couldn’t survive. But most people aren’t Daniel Switzer. Switzer and his business partners own Campus Street Sportswear and picked up the lease of the Steve & Barry’s former building at 515 E. Grand River Ave.

ANGEL upgrade in testing stage, will be ready by mid-May

MSU wants to avoid problems that plagued the last upgrade of the ANGEL system by helping to test the new version early. The university is set to upgrade either to version 7.4 or 7.3 of ANGEL in mid-May. The last time ANGEL was upgraded in 2007, the system presented numerous technical bugs, causing serious problems for faculty using ANGEL, said David Gift, vice-provost of Libraries, Computing and Technology.
