ELPD continues to work daily on sexual assault cases

The East Lansing Police Department, or ELPD, still is investigating the slew of sexual assaults that took place near the end of April and continued through May, with the most recent assault taking place on May 16, ELPD Captain Jeff Murphy said. “There fortunately haven’t been any more (assaults), but unfortunately we haven’t identified a suspect,” Murphy said. “We still have several open tips that we can’t close yet because the detective is still working on them.”

Obama appoints MSU graduate to CFPB

After months of delays, MSU graduate Richard Cordray was appointed the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, or CFPB on Tuesday with a 66-34 vote in the U.S. Senate. A 1981 legal and political theory graduate from MSU, Cordray went on to attend the University of Oxford, as well as the University of Chicago Law School. During his junior year, he had his first taste of politics, serving as an intern for U.S. Senator John Glenn. Cordray later went on to serve as the treasurer and later the Attorney General of Ohio until being picked by Obama to head up the CFPB.

With the city of East Lansing’s Play in the Park series starting Tuesday, families have a new way to make the most of the summer. Play in the Park is an interactive children’s entertainment series that takes place at 7 p.m. every Tuesday in July at Valley Court Park, 280 Valley Court.

MSU research discovers crucial link between peptide levels and Alzheimers

A team of MSU researchers might have found a crucial link between peptide levels in the brain and the escalation of Alzheimer’s disease. For the project, professor Christina Chan and MSU alumna Hirosha Geekiyanage experimented with mice, which were genetically altered to be more likely to develop symptoms of the disease. The team injected a compound called L-cycloserine into the mice and later found it decreased levels of peptides that have been shown to lead to the plaques on the brain associated with Alzheimer’s.

Lansing police respond to moped armed robbery Tuesday

Lansing police officers responded to an incident this morning on a weapons complaint. The victim, a female Lansing resident, informed the officers that she and others had been threatened by two subjects riding a stolen moped while armed, according to Lansing Public Information Officer Robert Merritt. When the officers arrived to the scene, they were able to locate the two suspects on the moped before a chase ensued on foot. One suspect threw the weapon and continued running, but was caught and placed into custody. The second suspect was not located by the officers. His identify currently is being investigated, Merritt said.

Local woman assaulted yesterday evening

Yesterday evening, a female victim was assaulted at the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center, 6400 Abbot Road, at approximately 5 p.m. The suspect, a male, was gone when the East Lansing police officers arrived on the scene. The police report has yet to be turned into the police department to be processed.

5th annual Mich. Livestock Expo showcases animals at MSU Pavilion

As an agricultural school, MSU certainly has been sticking to its roots during the past few days. The fifth annual Michigan Livestock Expo, or MLE, was hosted at the MSU Pavilion for the fourth-straight year this past weekend. The MLE started on Thursday and included competitions for lambs, swine, beef and goats throughout the weekend. The Swine and Beef market shows took place on Sunday, and the MLE will continue until Tuesday.

COGS looks forward to Chittenden Hall revamp

Tucked in among several of the oldest buildings on campus, there stands Chittenden Hall. It is not being used and has gone unused for more than a decade. Formerly known as the Forestry Building, Chittenden Hall has been vacant since 1999. The Council of Graduate Students, or COGS, has worked to bring the historic building back to life and use it for its own services.

24th annual auto show held in Grand Ledge

A Viking Blue 1976 Cutlass Supreme won State Sen. Rick Jones’s favorite car choice this year at the 24th annual Ledges Classic Auto Show at Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge Saturday afternoon. Since 1989, Fitzgerald Park has hosted Grand Ledge’s annual auto show during the second weekend in July, where people can enjoy a few days of music, prizes, awards, food and classic cars, some dating back over 100 years.

Lansing Community College student Lang Thai always considered photography a hobby, but he never thought his nighttime photo of Spartan Stadium would land him a $50 Meijer gift card. This July, Thai seeks to continue his successful photography run in the East Lansing Community Photo Contest, where community members of all ages are invited to display their photogenic talent by submitting up to five photos taken in East Lansing.

Face Time with George T. Roumell Jr.

After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1954, and working for U.S. District Court Judge Theodore Levin as a law clerk, George T. Roumell Jr. joined the Detroit College of Law as an adjunct professor in 1957. Now, nearly 60 years later, Roumell Jr. is the longest-serving faculty member at MSU College of Law.
