Comedy of Errors comes to U

Nobody can describe it in more eloquent terms than Homer Simpson - “Mmmm, Beer.”But not everyone is a fan of the cure-all temporary solution to life’s problems.Prime example: the residents of Iowa City, Iowa, and the administration of the University of Iowa, which calls the city home.According to an Associated Press story, school officials instructed the Hawkeye pep band to quit singing the words to the polka song, “In Heaven There Is No Beer,” three weeks ago after residents questioned the appropriateness of the song, given the university’s and city’s efforts to put underage and binge drinking in check.The song’s lyrics include the chorus, “In heaven, there is no beer/That’s why we drink it here/And when we’re gone from here/All our friends will be drinkin’ all the beer.”The band has performed the song to celebrate Hawkeye basketball victories for more than 20 years.

U plays games for charity

The second annual Bash on Cancer fund-raiser will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the Brody Complex Multipurpose room. The fund-raiser will include activities such as sumo wrestling, bouncy boxing, human joust and dancing.

Writers to be honored

The names of four successful journalists have come a long way from the published page. Their names will be added to a list of 98 others who have been inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame since its inception in 1985.Former Detroit Free Press journalists Barbara Stanton and the late Bob Talbert will be inducted April 21, along with Ben Burns, formerly of The Detroit News and the late Charles Cain III of The Associated Press.Stephen Lacy, chairman of the Hall of Fame committee and director of MSU’s School of Journalism, said the committee had little difficulty selecting this year’s inductees.“Most nominees aren’t inducted the first time they’re nominated, but in this case, all four of these were in their first year,” he said.

A long bus trip to Minnesota and Iowa to face the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the nation may not be the most desirable route to redemption, but that’s exactly the challenge the MSU wrestling team will face this weekend.The No.12 Spartans are coming off losses to Ohio State and Purdue last weekend.

Working through college is common practice for MSU students, but many working in their residence halls say working on campus has advantages not found off campus. From location to time management to schedule flexibility, on-campus employees have found that working while at MSU doesn’t mean crossing Grand River Avenue. Elementary education sophomore Holly Heymes is a desk receptionist in Wonders Hall, where she lives.

At 3:30 a.m. most insomniacs are finally getting some sleep. For English freshman Jacqueline Boehm, her day is just beginning. Early Monday morning, Boehm prepares for her job as night receptionist at South Hubbard Hall. With only two hours of sleep, Boehm applies a frozen ice-mask over her face in an attempt to wake up.

Several high school gridders choose U

After months of in-home visits and constant wooing of potential high school football recruits, MSU head coach Bobby Williams announced from inside the Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center the names of 21 recruits who signed a National Letter of Intent with the Spartans. “It really wasn’t an easy decision,” said Gordon Niebylski, a recruit from Birmingham Brother Rice High School in Farmington, Mich.

City approves request for legal advice on cameras

The East Lansing City Council approved Tuesday a request for a legal opinion on the placement of video cameras at some city intersections.If approved by the council, the cameras will be placed at some intersections to photograph the license plates of cars running red lights.

Students who consider using the Internet as a method of academic dishonesty should second guess themselves before they click twice.There are many sites, such as www.plagiarism.org, designed for professors to find out if work has been forged.Rosemary Johnsen a visiting assistant English professor at MSU, said she did not used to be concerned with students taking work off the Internet.That was until last semester - when she caught a student in the act.“I checked it out because it was so obviously not the student’s own work,” she said.

A plan to put video cameras at some East Lansing intersections to monitor those who run red lights could have some good results, but there are issues with the plan that need to be addressed before further action is taken. The East Lansing City Council is considering a plan to put cameras at intersections.

County enlists new rescue truck

MASON - A new Heavy Rescue Unit Vehicle, equipped with flashers, sirens and a spotlight system lined in brown and gold, branded with the insignia of the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office was introduced Tuesday.The $38,350 white Ford F550 Diesel is equipped with $11,260 worth of tools - lighting system, a generator, the jaws of life and a temporary helicopter landing site - that are used in emergencies.“We can deliver services to the public better, more efficiently and be assured the units will be there,” Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth said.Wriggelsworth announced the new vehicle Tuesday at a press conference in the sheriff’s garage.The sheriff’s office assisted seven fires and two extractions in 2001.
