MSU’s campus should champion free speech and welcome an assortment of viewpoints. Unfortunately today, sparked by challenges against liberal thought, university administrators and a minority of their leftist students have acted maliciously to create a culture opposing the virtues of free speech. OK, so now what? The panel appointed to examine the circumstances surrounding last year’s poorly executed undercover investigation of Students for Economic Justice has offered the university its coveted findings. The members - a professor, a former state legislator, a former trustee and a student government leader - say the ordeal was likely carried out inadequately. Perhaps, the panel wrote, MSU administrators need to take a more thorough approach the next time they consider stomping so freely on the liberties granted to student activists. The big finish?

U aids in research for online resource

Students of all ages will benefit from the creation of “Michigana,” a proposed online encyclopedia of Michigan history and culture. The Michigan Humanities Council announced Monday that Dr. Nancy Nelson Knupfer was hired as the project planning director for the encyclopedia, which will be launched in about a year. A $50,000 grant was awarded to the council for the project from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Study shows education gap growth

The number of minority students taking the SAT college entrance exam rose this year, but white students continued to score higher than most groups, the College Board reported Tuesday.The study showed average SAT scores among minority students lagged behind white students by a larger margin in 2001 than a decade ago - while minorities represented a third of the test-takers.

A program finding teachers for urban and rural schools across the nation now has a recruiter focusing on MSU students. With the teacher shortage affecting the nation, Michael Oden, a supply chain management junior, has his work cut out for him. “My girlfriend was applying for a position at Teach For America at (the University of Michigan), and I learned about the program,” he said.

Officers hope to better serve student groups

East Lansing Sgt. Nancy Hamilton spent eight of her 11 years with the East Lansing Police Department working with the canine patrol. Now she’s handling a completely different kind of animal - students. On top of her regular road-patrol duties, Hamilton will serve as the student alliance coordinator, a position created to improve relations between MSU students and police. “This is to try to get students familiar with officers,” Hamilton said.

MAC games test team for Big 10

In its only exhibition game, the MSU women’s soccer team notched a 3-1 win over Eastern Michigan of the Mid-American Conference last week. But head coach Tom Saxton isn’t overlooking the two MAC schools visiting MSU’s campus on the Spartans’ regular season-opening weekend. MSU takes on Western Michigan at 4 p.m.
