Diver off to nationals

Senior Carly Weiden qualified for the NCAA Championships in the three-meter dive during the NCAA Diving Regionals, Zone C, in West Lafayette, Ind. Weiden qualified on the second day of competition with a fifth-place finish. She will make the trip to the 2002 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Austin, Texas, Thursday through Saturday, to compete in the 1- and 3-meter boards. Junior Stephanie Anisko and freshman Kelly Baldwin also competed during the weekend, but did not qualify.

As John Lennon chewed his gum and sipped on purified water Thursday night at Harper’s Downtown, 131 Albert Ave., he had trouble figuring out why more people weren’t there to see his band perform.“We’ve got some people outside trying to get people in here, but apparently it isn’t working,” he said to George Harrison, who was surprised he was performing at a place that looked like a disco club.“We’ve played at disco clubs before, with the big disco ball and everything,” he said.

Grades should reflect the amount of work students accomplish in their classes, as well as the level of intellectual ability students have.

MSU’s undergraduate student government has a lot of questions to answer if it hopes to restore credibility to the organization and any of its referendum items to be voted on during this week’s universitywide elections. It seems ASMSU leaders will make an effort to do that at 7 p.m.

Lithuanian ambassador to the U.S. to visit DCL students

The Lithuanian ambassador to the United States will be at MSU-Detroit College of Law today to talk to students throughout the day. Vygaudas Usackas will conduct a European Union class tonight and meet with members from MSU International Studies and Programs and James Madison College. Like the students he will be talking with, Usackas pursued a law degree as a college student. He studied law at Vilnius University in Lietuva, earning his degree in May 1990.

SPORTS UPDATE: Spartans have second-round success in WNIT, top Illini 70-57

Champaign, Ill. - The MSU women’s basketball team advanced to the third round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament on Saturday with a 70-57 win against Illinois. The Spartans (18-12) trailed for most of the first half, but sophomore guard Candice Jackson hit a three-pointer to end the half with MSU leading 32-28. Jackson finished the game with 11 points, but freshman Kelli Roehrig led MSU’s balanced attack with 14.

Work not done

While there have been improvements at MSU concerning awareness of the lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender community, there’s still a long way to go before true acceptance on campus can be achieved. In 1992, the University-Wide Task Force on Lesbian and Gay Issues and MSU published “Moving Forward,” a report that assessed the climate toward the LBGT community and identified ways to improve that quality of life.

Energy Awareness Week reminds U to conserve

Next week, cars without gasoline and machines powered by wind instead of electricity will become the norm at MSU. Beginning Monday, the Office of Campus Sustainability and MSU’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America will host Energy Awareness Week. Students, faculty and staff will have the chance to check out the future, including solar-powered cars and the newest in computer technology. “This is one way we can highlight some of the things we are suggesting,”said Brenda Wrigley, assistant professor of public relations and public relations society adviser.

Kelli Richardson enjoys going out on weekends, but she also knows about GHB, ecstasy and other club drugs - and often worries about being exposed to them.“Sometimes when I go out with my friends, I think about someone slipping a drug into my drink,” the microbiology sophomore said.

The MSU men’s golf team will compete in the Conrad Rehling Spring Invitational this weekend. The invitational starts today in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and ends Sunday.

Womens team wins first-round WNIT game

MSU continued to play high-octane offensive basketball Thursday night, defeating DePaul 87-76 in the first round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.It was the third-straight game the Spartans (17-12) topped the 80-point mark, topping their season average of 63.3 by more than 23 points.
