GEU tells U: Deal or strike

Members of MSU’s Graduate Employees Union announced Tuesday they will strike Thursday and during finals week if health care and salary needs aren’t met by university officials. At a two-and-a-half hour meeting in Bessey Hall on Tuesday, members voted 171-11 to authorize union officials to call a strike.

SPORTS UPDATE: Former Spartan Magic nominated for entry into Hall of Fame

Earvin “Magic” Johnson is one step closer to joining professional basketball’s most selective club.The former MSU star was announced today as one of 14 players and coaches to be nominated for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame.The official announcement of this year’s inductees comes at a Los Angeles ceremony in June, and Johnson is expected to be a shoo-in for the hall.Johnson led the Spartans to the 1979 national title and enjoyed a 13-year career in the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Garland interviews for head coach job

Just a week after one piece of the Spartan men’s basketball coaching staff decided to stay put, another assistant soon might be leaving the MSU sidelines.MSU assistant coach Mike Garland will interview for the head coaching job at Wisconsin-Green Bay today, Wisconsin-Green Bay Sports Information Director Brian Nicol said.Garland, a teammate of MSU head coach Tom Izzo at Northern Michigan, has spent six seasons as an assistant on the Spartan bench.

Council debates ways to increase parking revenue

East Lansing officials are looking to curb rising parking fees by no longer offering free holiday parking and adding programs that would attract student motorists to downtown spaces. The East Lansing City Council addressed city parking concerns - including the possibility of raising parking fees by 10 cents per half-hour - at its Tuesday work session. There always is reluctance to raise parking rates, City Manger Ted Staton said. “(City Council) will probably modify it,” he said.

Oldsmobile welcomes Spartan sluggers tonight

The MSU baseball team will have revenge on the mind tonight at Oldsmobile Park.The Spartans (26-9 overall, 9-6 Big Ten) will travel to Lansing for the first time this season to host Central Michigan, which defeated MSU both times the two teams faced off last season.

Wow, this really is it. The last movie review I’ll write for The State News. The last time I ever will have to go to a movie that I don’t want to see, and the last time I ever will get a chance to bitch about it. I’m excited, and I’m a little sad.

Service provides legal ease

It was on a dark night before Valentine’s Day when Cortney, an English junior, crashed her 1999 Cavalier through an electric construction sign and three orange construction cones at about 55 mph before coasting into an abandoned house on Coolidge Road. The English junior found herself crawling out of her totaled car’s back seat door to escape the accident after she had two glasses of wine on an empty stomach about an hour before.

Time to change

Lawmakers should seize the opportunity to protect Michigan schoolchildren from countless amounts of unwanted solicitation by protecting public school’s student directories from Freedom of Information Act requests. And while they’re at it, the Legislature should look to update Michigan’s “sunshine laws,” which protect citizens’ right to access information and take part in their government.

COMMENTARY

Group sorry; flier not meant to offend

Vanessa Vanecek’s letter to the editor “Flier’s standards far from reality” (SN 4/22) makes an excellent point, but as the coordinator of the Respecting and Understanding Body Image candlelight vigil and one of the creators of the flier, this was not our intention. The two standards of beauty were meant to show the disparity between how the media portray beauty and where the average woman falls, urging women not to believe the “model” type is the ideal of perfection.

Tasteless wear

Despite what MSU students may have learned in recent weeks about creating and wearing offensive T-shirts, it seems officials at Abercrombie & Fitch Inc. clothing stores are in need of the same lesson. The New Albany, Ohio-based company distributed four T-shirt designs related to Asian culture for $24.50.

Cartoons attack on priests not funny

I am writing to voice my disgust in The State News’ publication of a cartoon making reference to a priest’s pleasure in the recent federal court decision on child pornography (SN 4/18). I was very disappointed to see such a conclusion drawn and placed upon an already sad situation.
