Tyrell Dortch has reason to be frustrated at football. But he’s not. When the MSU secondary lost four players last season, Dortch, a tailback, filled in at cornerback, and it almost crippled him.

U makes DNA finding

From the dark laboratories of Giltner Hall, an MSU professor and a doctoral student have helped advance DNA research.Microbiology and biochemistry Professor Robert Hausinger and doctoral student Timothy Henshaw discovered a new way to repair damaged DNA last spring.

Fly em high

While it is acceptable for people to take actions to avoid unnecessary conflicts, sometimes unnecessary actions are taken when conflict isn’t there, as is the case with a recent decision by the Crestwood School District in Dearborn Heights. Crestwood district officials ordered the removal of an international flag display in the district high school cafeteria, citing fear of a schism between Arab and non-Arab students. Luckily for the high school, its students are not as naive as the district board.

Group brings Latin comedy

Hispanic Heritage Month is kicking off with lots of laughs. “Latinologues,” a skit-comedy show that focuses on Latino life in both humorous and serious dialogues, will be appearing at MSU for the first time at 7 p.m.

TVs from International Center food court may be taken back

Students who sit in the International Center’s Crossroads Food Court watching television while doing homework or eating a Frosty may soon find themselves looking out the window instead. ASMSU Academic Assembly Chairperson Matt Clayson said he was recently contacted by a College Television Network representative who asked that the televisions be removed from the International Center because the televisions are not tuned to the CTN station. “College Television Network is probably going to pull them,” he said.

SN right to publish story about hunger

I commend The State News for picking up the article on the food crisis in Zimbabwe (“Hunger takes toll in Zimbabwe” SN 9/9). The plight of 1.2 billion people throughout the world who live in absolute poverty is normally overlooked in the news.

After one year on the West Coast, former Spartan star Mateen Cleaves is headed back to the Midwest in search of some playing time.Cleaves, a point guard, was traded from the Sacramento Kings to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday in exchange for second-year forward Jumaine Jones.

The Lansing Lugnuts have made it to the Midwest League finals for just the second time in franchise history, but have a great task ahead of them if they want to snag the championship like they did in 1997. In 1997 the Lugnuts trailed the Kane County Cougars 2-0.
