I'm irritated. For the past few weeks, some minority student groups on campus have been targeting The State News for a lack of coverage of their events and issues. On Nov.

No matter what, Tom Newton was going to be at the BGSU Ice Arena this Friday. But the MSU assistant coach probably wishes he was directing the Bowling Green bench instead of being in a supporting role with the Spartans. Newton applied for the Falcons' head coaching vacancy this offseason, but Boston College assistant and fellow BGSU alumnus Scott Paluch got the job.
The Detroit-based band Bump was constructed of self-proclaimed pacifists searching peacefully for a way to expose more people to their music - and they hope to do this when they play tonight in East Lansing. The band will take the stage around 11:30 p.m.
Believe it or not, the idea of different people from different backgrounds living under the same roof was not spawned by MTV's "The Real World." And in case you haven't noticed, "The Real World" lacks a significant amount of reality; but that's so secret. Perhaps the best kept secret about communal living lies in "Together." The 2000 film portrays life for six Swedish hippies living under communist ideals in the mid 1970s. Elisabeth (Lisa Lindgren) and her two children move into a hippie commune with her brother Goran (Gustav Hammarsten) after her husband Rolf (Michael Nyqvist) hits her.
Flash back 15 years. Ma and pa sent you packing PB&J in a Care Bears lunchbox. Man, that Professor Coldheart was mean.
The Hubbard Hall Black Caucus is holding its third annual Cypha Tournament at 7:30 p.m. today in the Auditorium's Fairchild Theatre in conjunction with BlackNotes of ASMSU. The night features a freestyle rap-battle contest where the artist must combine quick wit, rhythm and poetry to earn the right to be crowned MSU's top lyricist. Three years ago, in the Hubbard Hall Black Caucus Room, Cypha Nite was originally a time to relax and enjoy the company of others among poetic reverence. "It was an event that started in Hubbard's basement," said Hubbard Hall President Charles Stephens.

Former Irish President Mary Robinson came to Wharton Center's Great Hall on Tuesday night, speaking to hundreds of spectators on the importance of improving human rights around the world. The speech was part of the World View Lecture Series and fell in the middle of MSU's International Education Week.Robinson, who was Ireland's first female president and served at that post from 1990-97, said about 6.3 million children die worldwide of hunger each year, and nations need to work together to solve the problem."When statistics are spoken, they're usually glazed over," Robinson told the crowd.
The University Investment Commission is asking state officials to create a long-term strategy to make higher education more affordable and available to Michigan residents.State, business and university officials are being asked to work together to boost the number of residents with a four-year degree, the retention rates in universities and to increase aide to students. It reports Michigan is 2 percent behind the national average of people holding a four-year degree and it supports students $1,000 less than aggregate per-student appropriations compared to other Great Lake states."Two percent on paper doesn't look that big, but when you're looking at the population of the state, it's a big deal," said Rep.
After reading the editorial "No new taxes" (SN 11/18), it became clear to me that The State News doesn't view social responsibility as much of a priority as say football or parking issues seem to be.
Florida natives and peace activists Lori Baralt and Michael Perez arrived at MSU this fall expecting to join student groups in campaigning against the Bush administration's conflict with Iraq. Instead, the couple found themselves organizing their own anti-war group, holding teach-ins, promoting traffic-stopping protests on Grand River Avenue and inspiring hundreds of students to join the peace movement. "We need to show people that we're not just some naive neo-hippies protesting the war for love and peace," said Perez, an anthropology graduate student.
To receive consideration for the NCAA Tournament, the Spartans arguably need to win three of their next four contests. And for the MSU volleyball team, making it to the postseason for the ninth consecutive year won't be the easiest of tasks if this season has been a guide. MSU (16-10 overall, 8-8 Big Ten) sits in a tie for seventh place in the conference with Indiana.
Members of the Delta Chi Fraternity have created a plan of action they hope will sway the East Lansing Housing Commission from evicting members living in the house. Since May 2001, three noise violations prompted the commission to impose terms and conditions on the fraternity.
Although the MSU football team had a familiar result when it lost to Purdue 45-42 at Spartan Stadium, interim head coach Morris Watts said there was a difference in the way the team played. "One of the things I felt very good about was how hard our young men competed through the four quarters," he said.
