'U' disappointed E.L. school may close

A jewel on MSU's campus could soon be buried.The closure of Spartan Village Elementary School is included in a 25-point plan announced Monday by East Lansing Public Schools Superintendent Tom Giblin which he hopes will help the district overcome a projected $4.2-million shortfall next year.

Student in medically induced coma at Sparrow

A female journalism sophomore remains in an induced coma-like state at Lansing's Sparrow Hospital, a source close to the student said Wednesday. The infected student, who is a resident of the ninth floor of South Hubbard Hall, was diagnosed with meningococcemia last week. The source said the student was put on sedatives, including morphine, and is expected to wake up within the next few days. The student's name has not been released on her family's request. Sparrow officials would not comment on her condition Wednesday night.

Students cruising down Abbott Road are encouraged to drop in for citywide birthday bash. The East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbott Road, will celebrate its first birthday on Saturday from 1-4 p.m.

Grad school applications up

Nick Reister didn't even bother applying for any jobs when he graduated."The economy was in a state where it would be more beneficial for me to increase my education," said Reister, a first-year MSU-Detroit College of Law student, who graduated from Hope College last year.Reister is among a growing number of students who are opting to attend graduate school rather than looking for work amid the slumping economy and difficult job market.

Lately it seems people with conservative opinions have not been able to express their ideas on this campus. Oftentimes, being labeled a conservative is as good as being labeled a racist or a bigot.

Sarah McEvilly doesn't even want to think about how much money she's borrowed for college.A journalism junior from Illinois, McEvilly estimates she will have accumulated a debt of $80,000 for tuition and living expenses by the time she graduates."I really don't think about paying school off now," McEvilly said.

Victories away from home not coming easy for Big Ten teams

MSU women's basketball team picked up its first road win of 2003 on Sunday by defeating Indiana 64-53 at Assembly Hall. Prior to the victory, the Spartans had posted a 3-4 record away from East Lansing, dropping their last three road games - all conference games. But MSU (11-7 overall, 4-3 Big Ten) is not alone.

Football recruiting class up to 12, more might come

MSU's recruitment class has quickly jumped to a dozen with the addition of a speedy running back - and two more recruits could be on the way. Former Antelope Valley College sophomore running back DeAndra Cobb verbally committed to MSU during winter break. Canadian offensive lineman Mike Gyetvai said he has not committed to MSU and the university expects an answer from him by tonight.

Local band to celebrate release of new album tonight at Rick's

Getting the ball rolling on a new record is a daunting and dubious task for a local band. Recording studios are expensive, and finding the right professionals to help put the music to disc is never simple. But East Lansing's The Flow took matters into its own hands and built a home studio to record its new album "Aurelius," which will be available at the band's CD release party tonight at Rick's American Café, 224 Abbott Road.
