Assistant hall director resigns, says she can't live in dorm with same-sex partner

For the past four months, Carolyn O'Laughlin has woken up each morning with the same thought: Is today the day I get fired?The former assistant hall director for Mason Hall has been in a relationship with French graduate student Rebecca Linz for more than a year and the couple formalized their union over winter break.But the university doesn't allow students in same-sex relationships to live together or receive benefits, so O'Laughlin voluntary resigned from her position in Residence Life today and the couple will move out of Mason on Wednesday."I really loved my job until I couldn't do it anymore," O'Laughlin, a student affairs graduate student, said.

Manz finishes 12th in shot put in Arkansas The MSU men's and women's track teams concluded their seasons at the 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday in Arkansas. The lone female representative, senior Ann Somerville, placed 14th out of 17 runners in the 3,000-meter run. Junior Steve Manz placed 12th in the shot put with a throw of 61-2 1/4. 2 Spartans qualify for championships Two members of the MSU men's swimming and diving team qualified for the NCAA Diving Championships this weekend. Junior Justin Laskowski and senior Nick Visscher qualified for the championships at the NCAA Zone C Qualifying Meet in Oxford, Ohio. On the women's side, senior Stephanie Anisko failed to qualify for the championships. Laskowski and Visscher will compete at the NCAA Championships on March 27-29 in Austin, Texas.

Assistant prosecutor's future undecided after suspension

Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III has yet to decide if he will reinstate an assistant prosecutor after she was suspended after allegations she and others schemed to retrieve a cat that had been sold to an animal dealer.Dunnings said he need more information before deciding the fate of Allie Phillips, who works in the prosecutor's family division.

Protesters speak out, get counterprotested on Grand River Avenue

Although Allison Saxby's husband is in the Army in Texas waiting for deployment to the Middle East, she stood on the median on Grand River Avenue protesting the war. "He wants to go fight and I think it's a bunch of crap," she said holding a sign that said "Peace is Patriotism." "We have different feelings." Saxby was among about 100 protesters standing on one of the city's busiest areas holding candles as they delayed traffic. During the protest, passing motorists honked horns while some passers-by protested the protesters. "We're going to war.
