National billing not yet earned

One word sums up MSU's basketball team - potential. And that, my friends, is an ugly word. Sure, the Spartans have three wins under their belts and have added more useless hardware to their trophy case after sweeping up at the Coca-Cola Spartan Classic. But Tom Izzo's team has begun each game in a slumber.

Fuel for the future

Amid the whirring fan-like sounds of machinery designed to extract DNA from corn plants, Mariam Sticklen hovered over a Biolistic gun Monday as she worked to genetically engineer corn plants to produce ethanol, a renewable gasoline replacement. Placing a piece of corn leaf inside of the machine, Sticklen displayed a .22-caliber bullet that the machine would fire into the leaf, before DNA mixed with gunpowder can be extracted to help create an ethanol-producing corn plant. The professor of plant genetic engineering is one of many MSU researchers searching for cheaper methods to produce ethanol, a corn-based fuel.

Biofortification does not answer problem

Thank you for highlighting the need for more work on hunger and malnutrition in your editorial "Magic beans" (SN 11/19). However, biofortification is not the magic bullet that will rid the world of malnutrition. Biofortification is a stop-gap measure that will address only a very small portion of the malnutrition problem.

Lions still have slim chance of making playoffs

The champagne is on ice, chilling for the celebration of the century. And as the weeks go by, it becomes more and more of a possibility because, contrary to popular belief, the Detroit Lions (4-8) still have a shot at the playoffs. If asked about his team's chances, new head coach Steve Mariucci would certainly deny it, but with a little help and a whole lot of love, the hometown professional pigskin tossers will be sitting pretty in the playoffs. All this playoff talk gets me excited and also makes me remember the infamous words of former Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Mora, who shouted, "Playoffs?
