Majority of SN panel declares Cheney winner

Vice President Dick Cheney and Sen. John Edwards made strides to distinguish themselves from each other and their respective running mates during the vice-presidential debate Tuesday evening. And The State News debate panel noticed. "It's clear where the Democrats and Republicans stand now," undecided voter Pete Rossman said, adding Cheney won the debate. Kerry supporter Katie Derthick said she agreed that the debate held at Case Western Reserve University provided more information than the debate between President Bush and Sen.

Bremer discusses Iraq at Wharton

Former U.S ambassador to Iraq L. Paul Bremer said Tuesday at MSU he believes the United States sent enough troops to Iraq - despite his comment just one day earlier that there weren't adequate forces to control the country. Bremer spoke for roughly 45 minutes at the Wharton Center about terrorism, the state of Iraq and its future, all while battling constant interruptions by protesters.

Council to address redevelopment, shoplifting cases

Following a thumbs up from the planning commission, a plan to demolish a building on the corner of Bailey Street and Grand River Avenue will go before East Lansing City Council for approval tonight. The plan has struggled to gain support for months, but developers made numerous changes to accommodate city and neighborhood requests. Corey Partnership hopes to redevelop the buildings at 601-603 E.

Northern Tier shooting leaves 1 man wounded

Bath Township - A shooting at The Club at Chandler Crossings early Saturday left one man injured and a 21-year-old Lansing man facing up to 10 years in jail, Clinton County prosecutors said. Lansing resident Pedro Serna pulled out a gun during a fight involving several people in Building 11 of the apartments, located at 3850 Coleman Road, a Bath Township police report said.

Savoring the season

The sound of hundreds of apples tumbling down conveyor belts and being ground by presses echoed throughout the rustic-barn house when Jennifer Rheaume took her 18-month-old daughter Seasan for her first visit to Uncle John's Cider Mill. "We stopped by for a snack," Rheaume, 20, an MSU building construction management junior said as Seasan scooped handfuls of a cinnamon-sugared doughnuts into her mouth and washed it down with a small cup of apple cider.

Injuries could sit out two Spartans spikers

While MSU volleyball senior outside hitter Michelle Kopka might return to the court as early as Wednesday, junior middle Brooke Langston might be questionable now, head coach Chuck Erbe said. This past weekend, MSU played Indiana and Purdue, beating Indiana 3-0 on Friday night before falling to Purdue 3-2 Saturday. Kopka did not play in either match because of an injured ankle and was wearing a protective boot last week.

Tailgating will be restricted to five hours before game time and two hours after, and drinking games of all kinds will be prohibited on campus, according to regulations released by university officials Monday.

District school program receives $1M in funding

The U.S. Department of Education awarded the Lansing School District more than $1 million to develop smaller learning communities within the district's three high schools. The program, called Smaller Students, Parents, Administrators, Community, and Educators to Improve Student Achievement (Smaller SPACES), will focus on creating learning environments with smaller numbers of students.
