Good flip-flop

The ability to learn from our mistakes is what facilitates knowledge - knowledge of our surroundings, our environment and the people in it.

Students take 'Fed Challenge'

Five MSU economics students attended the College Fed Challenge competition in Chicago on Monday. The competition, which had never been held in the Midwest, required participants to understand the Federal Reserve System, analyze the economy and make policy recommendations.

Third parties are not 'traitor' votes

I plan on voting for Michael Badnarik, the Libertarian candidate for president, today. In the past few months, I've listened to and read all sorts of misconceived rantings against third-party voters. The mainstream camps like to brand us as idealistic, fringy or foolish.

Attempts to target youth voters devoid of information, effectiveness

Puff Daddy is an opportunistic youth locust. If turning a once-great art form into self-absorbed braggadocio about money and spinning platinum hubcaps wasn't enough to earn him a special place in Hell, his exploitation of kids who wanted to become more politically-minded will hopefully get him a reservation. His "Vote or Die" campaign was meaningless fear-tactic fodder in the name of self-promotion.

It's here: Last chance to vote

After tonight, East Lansing officials can breathe a sigh of relief. They will hope nearly a year's preparation and work on backup plans would have paid off with the election's passing. At the helm of elections in the area is East Lansing City Clerk Sharon Reid.

Season finale

The rapping of fists upon doorways echoed throughout the hallways of West Circle Complex residence halls on Thursday night as members of the MSU College Democrats made one of their final campus walks before Election Day. Armed with dozens of pro-Democrat pamphlets, stickers and buttons as well as a list of students identified as backers of presidential candidate John Kerry, a handful of College Democrats trekked from room to room in the hopes of solidifying support and to remind residents to vote today. "My knuckles are permanently bruised from this semester," said Molly Messinger, treasurer for the MSU College Democrats, as she knocked on a door in Landon Hall.

End game

On the eve of presidential elections it usually happens - the campaign-end surprise. One or both candidates will pull out some powerhouse, earth-shattering dirt on their competition. In 2000, Democrats served up President Bush's drunk-driving record to sway voters days before the election.

Strep test finds strains in women

Group B Strep (GBS) can be fatal to newborns, but with a new test designed in part by an MSU researcher, the specific strain can be recognized and treatment can begin within 40 minutes. "This test can be done quickly and effectively - that's why this is so important," said Dele Davies, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development. Research for the new test was a collaboration with faculty members of several North American universities including the University of Texas, the University of Calgary in Canada and the University of Pittsburgh. The molecular diagnostic test magnifies and identifies DNA specific to Group B Strep, which is naturally present in women, but can infect infants during birth. Both tests involve a strep culture, using a large cotton swab similar to the ones employed in strep throat tests.

Group twirls flags to single rhythm

Being instructed to walk, turn, eyes up, chin up and count to eight, is not just something would be heard in boot camp. Those commands were given on Wednesday by coach Don Sheldon as Expression, MSU's winter guard team, started its 12th season.

Column's rationale keeps 'U' mediocre

I am writing in response to Jonathan Malavolti's column "Fans couldn't ask for more from Spartans" (SN 11/1). His blind support of the team, win or lose, is the reason that this program has been steeped in mediocrity for 35 years. Yes, they gave a valiant effort, and yes, they played hard for most of the game.

Nader's campaign more grass roots than majority parties

Rashad Jackson Special for The State News As the election season comes to an end, Ryan Dinkgrave said he remains skeptical that third-party candidate Ralph Nader will win the presidency. "Theoretically, it could happen, as the majority of the votes have not been cast and he is on the ballot in enough states to legally qualify," said Dinkgrave, president of MSU for Nader.
