Homeless shelter could close

Lansing — Walk through the doors of the New Hope Day Center and you will hear plenty of conversations and some laughter, as well as feel warmth. On a day when the weather is just a few degrees above zero, anywhere with heat is comforting — something the clients of New Hope are looking for.

Definition of marriage should not be based on sexual orientation

With every issue I have an opinion about, I make a concerted effort to understand those who disagree with me — their motives, feelings, reasons — because without mutual understanding, I do not believe problems can really be resolved or gaps ever bridged. However, there are a few issues of which I truly do not understand the "other side." I try, but I cannot seem to find a common ground on which I agree with, or at least understand and appreciate, the views of those who disagree with my opinion.

Icers look for strong finish as season closes

The Spartans have looked at their schedule and seen the remaining games. But they're not getting ahead of themselves. With two games apiece against CCHA bottom-feeders Western Michigan, Bowling Green and Ferris State, MSU seemingly could declare a first-round CCHA playoff bye right now.

Same-sex partners deserve benefits

Another blow was delivered to same-sex couples Friday, with the state court's decision to ban same-sex health care benefits. The ruling follows the state constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage from the 2004 election — it passed with 59 percent of the vote. According to the court, when Michigan voters approved the ban on gay marriages, they also banned domestic partner benefits as well. During the run-up to the election, proponents of the gay marriage ban stated early and often that same-sex couples retain all the rights afforded to them.

MSU celebrates Black History Month

The former president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Rev. Joseph Lowery, will speak about "Weapons of Mass Deception" on Thursday. Civil rights activists such as Lowery risked their lives, fortunes and families to better society, said Pat Grauer, a spokeswoman for the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Lowery, who co-founded the SCLC with Martin Luther King Jr., was the first recipient of Boston University's Martin Luther King Award and delivered eulogies at Rosa Parks' and Coretta Scott King's funerals. "It really says a lot about the way the civil right community holds him in esteem," Grauer said.

All of the female students in MSU's College of Engineering could fit in one large lecture hall — with room to spare. That's 488 females out of 2,845 total engineering students, or 17 percent, who enrolled for 2006 fall semester. This number is on par according to the U.S.

A Spartan for life

It's almost game time at Breslin Center. Mary Smith, who stands just above 5 feet, seems small amid the bustling arena. The 91-year-old walks to her seat, wearing her favorite white hat, a dark green skirt and white boots — green and white from head to toe. "She's always dressed to the nines," said Kris Hassan, a 1974 MSU alumna who befriended Smith several years ago at a basketball game.

Garbage imports overcrowd landfills

Michigan is a desirable location for garbage exports from around the world. But the dirty habit of making cash from other people's trash has left the state with little capacity in its landfills. A report filed two weeks ago with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, or DEQ, estimated Michigan landfills have 18 years of space remaining in them. "It's certainly a concern for us," DEQ spokesman Bob McCann said.
