I was on campus when the IM Sports pools opened, and they were state of the art, but that was almost 50 years ago.
College costs could rise under a plan to increase the amount of Pell Grant money awarded per student each year. The plan, proposed Monday by President Bush, would gradually increase the federal grant from $4,050 to $5,400 for low-income college students. But some speculate it will come at a price. The Bush administration could cut federal programs for "very needy" college students, such as the Perkins Loan Program and the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, said Val Meyers, associate director of MSU's Office of Financial Aid. "(Bush) is proposing some really nice increases, but he has to pay for it by taking away other stuff," Meyers said.
Lansing MSU faculty gathered with the Michigan Senate Economic Development Committee on Wednesday to discuss how the university and state can become leaders in a post-petroleum economy. This is the first of many committee meetings throughout the next few months. The transition to a bioeconomy is crucial for Michigan to survive, which was made evident by the State of the Union and State of the State addresses, said Steve Webster, MSU's vice president of governmental affairs. "Those leaders identified the bioeconomy as an area of growth for our country and state," he said.
West Lafayette, Ind. Murphy's law states, "Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong." That sentiment couldn't have been any more true for MSU when the team faced Purdue on Wednesday. The Spartans, struggling to get their head above water in the Big Ten, would have been wise to take advantage of a mid-tier conference foe in a half-empty stadium with the score tied at halftime, 26-26. But MSU fell apart in nearly every facet in the final 20 minutes, blowing the opportunity to secure its first true quality road win of the season.

Before losing to Ohio State at home last week, Purdue was 12-0 at Mackey Arena this season. Before beating Penn State in State College, Pa., three days later, the Boilermakers hadn't won a road game in three years. So as the Spartans (17-7 overall, 4-5 Big Ten) travel to West Lafayette, Ind., tonight for an 8 p.m.
Lansing Slashing school funding is not the way to get Michigan out of its looming budget crisis, said Gov.
Another blow was delivered to same-sex couples Friday, with the state court's decision to ban same-sex health care benefits. The ruling follows the state constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage from the 2004 election it passed with 59 percent of the vote. According to the court, when Michigan voters approved the ban on gay marriages, they also banned domestic partner benefits as well. During the run-up to the election, proponents of the gay marriage ban stated early and often that same-sex couples retain all the rights afforded to them.
The Spartans have looked at their schedule and seen the remaining games. But they're not getting ahead of themselves. With two games apiece against CCHA bottom-feeders Western Michigan, Bowling Green and Ferris State, MSU seemingly could declare a first-round CCHA playoff bye right now.
With every issue I have an opinion about, I make a concerted effort to understand those who disagree with me their motives, feelings, reasons because without mutual understanding, I do not believe problems can really be resolved or gaps ever bridged. However, there are a few issues of which I truly do not understand the "other side." I try, but I cannot seem to find a common ground on which I agree with, or at least understand and appreciate, the views of those who disagree with my opinion.
Lansing Walk through the doors of the New Hope Day Center and you will hear plenty of conversations and some laughter, as well as feel warmth. On a day when the weather is just a few degrees above zero, anywhere with heat is comforting something the clients of New Hope are looking for.

Much has been written lately in The State News about atheism and Christianity. To me, Christianity and atheism are like two bars of metal. The surface of the atheistic bar is golden, shiny and aesthetically pleasing while the Christian bar appears soiled, dirty and unattractive.
In response to "Tax plans could start political feud" (SN 1/30), I think The State News is both hypocritical and a bit confused.
