Simon: Aid raised to offset state tuition hike

Despite skyrocketing tuition costs, MSU's financial aid programs have "kept pace" with increasing tuition in the last four years, lessening the burden on students. During the past four years, tuition at public universities statewide increased an average of 37 percent.

Lyman Briggs redefines its status

The odds seem to be in favor of Lyman Briggs School becoming a college by its 40th anniversary this fall. The proposed change was discussed Tuesday within MSU's Academic Governance at the Executive Committee for Academic Council, or ECAC, meeting.

Designers, City Council discuss East Village design

Cairo. Beijing. Hong Kong. East Lansing? Aspects of such previous projects by 5+Design were used in drafting the preliminary designs for East Lansing's future East Village development. The Hollywood-based architecture firm is working with East Lansing officials and the project's master developer, San Diego-based Pierce Company Inc. The redevelopment is expected to revamp the area bounded by East Grand River Avenue, Bogue Street, Hagadorn Road and the Red Cedar River. Representatives from 5+Design and The Pierce Company presented the preliminary designs to the East Lansing City Council on Tuesday.

MSU organizations and the city of East Lansing are baiting students to do community service with the reward of a free concert by a mystery artist. After approximately a year and more than 100 hours of planning, ASMSU, the Residence Halls Association, MSU and the city will sponsor the Volunteer To Rock concert on April 11 at Wharton Center. The concert will be a reward for students who perform 10 hours of community service. "Everyone thinks MSU is a party school, but no one realizes that more than 10,000 students do community service and this would be a great way to celebrate community service," Cynthia Chang, ASMSU's assistant director of governmental affairs for the city, said.

'A new life': Student aids in foal's delivery

Colleen Bolitho had an unexpected valentine this year. At 1:30 a.m. Feb. 14, Bolitho, an animal science senior, delivered her second foal of the year at the MSU Horse Teaching and Research Center. This particular foal was a special case from the start — it almost didn't arrive at all. Bolitho and the rest of the farm staff became concerned about the welfare of the foal when its mother, a maiden mare named Swirling Star, sustained lacerations on her two back legs in December.

I'm writing about David McAllister's column "Drug war overhaul" (SN 2/27). I agree that the drug war needs a major overhaul; however, eliminating poverty will not eliminate drug use. Marijuana is used by all social and economic groups.

U.S. not Christian state, laws not founded in Bible

Andrew Mead claims that the Bible says gay marriage is wrong in "Bible is standard against slavery, gay marriage" (SN 2/27). I'm not a Christian, yet I know that many Christians will disagree with him. But Andrew — when your holy text says that we should deny rights to people because of the way they were born, is it not time to disregard that holy text and get with modern times? The United States is not a Christian nation, therefore its laws should not be founded on the Bible.

DeHaan leads team in Big Ten honors

Four players from the MSU women's basketball team earned All-Big Ten status as announced by the conference Tuesday. Freshman center Allyssa DeHaan led the way for MSU, earning Freshman of the Year honors and being named second-team All-Big Ten.
