Exasperated outrage

Years ago, when I was too young to appreciate it, I saw Sidney Lumet's 1976 classic "Network," and it had an impact on me. I saw Howard Beale, the rumpled, disaffected, disgruntled network news anchor, as a hero — someone who had finally sifted through enough of the world's crap and was tired of pretending everything was all right. He was "mad as hell" and he wasn't going to take it anymore.

Men's golf team win weekend tournament

The MSU men's golf team won the Fossum/Spartan Invitational, hosted by MSU at Forest Akers West Golf Course, for the first time in 15 years. The Spartans won by 14 strokes and had a 54-hole total of 841, good for 23 strokes under par. MSU's Matt Harmon and Jack Newman were part of a three-way tie, along with Xavier's Jason Kokrak, for top medalist honors.

Adam Demers' last words to Nick Tselepis on Friday characterized the chemical engineering freshman's lightheartedness to a T. "He said, 'That's just the breaks,'" Tselepis said.

Without students, courses could go

Joe Genetin-Pilawa's summer paycheck depends on whether a class he is teaching off campus reaches its minimum enrollment requirement. The history graduate student is teaching Modern United States history this summer in Birmingham. As of Wednesday, nine students were enrolled in the class.

Reverse 911 safety system in place for MSU students

"Glad to know MSU is on track." That was what Linda Gibson, an administrative assistant in the Union director's office, said Thursday after receiving three phone calls from the MSU Police department's Reverse 911 system. "It would have been nice if they had them at Virginia Tech," Gibson said. That sentiment is one of many reasons why MSU already has been actively preparing the campus for an emergency situation ranging from chemical spills, derailed trains or incidents similar to the shooting Monday at Virginia Tech University. The Reverse 911 system has been in place since 2003.

MSU to build first disc golf course

The biggest opponent the MSU Disc Golf club faces in its quest to build a new course on campus? Dogs. "We don't want dogs chasing after the Frisbees or jumping on the players or participants," said Angela Michael, assistant director of Intramural Sports and Recreative Services. The club is set to begin construction next week on a disc golf course located at the 40-acre Ag Expo lot on south campus.

Olin to offer help for nicotine addicts

A new nicotine anonymous 12-step program will take place from noon to 1 p.m. every Wednesday in 247 Olin Health Center starting on May 9. Those who would like to be free of their nicotine addiction may attend, even if they are still currently smoking.

After working with male domestic violence offenders, Ted Bunch saw the need to integrate men into the fight against domestic and sexual abuse against women. Bunch is the senior program director of a domestic violence accountability program in New York.

As post-collegiate debt skyrockets, book prices rise exponentially and tuition rates grow with unchecked abandon, the makeup of those attending college is changing. They are getting richer. According to UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute, today's college freshmen are wealthier than they've been in the past 35 years.
