FOOTBALL

Sounding off

Professional athletes need to start thinking with their heads — that is, before they lose them. With Miami Dolphins quarterback Trent Green suffering his second concussion in as many years Sunday, it’s time athletes re-evaluate how they want to live the rest of their lives.

Reporter gets unique chance on hardwood

Growing up as a sports fan, I had a pretty fair idea that I wanted to become a sportswriter after I figured out that I didn’t possess a Reggie Miller-esqe jump shot. So, I opted to dream about joining the other side of the sports world, and thought I had a good gist of what it all involved.

FOOTBALL

Deep purple

Saturday’s 48-41 overtime loss to Northwestern was particularly bittersweet for junior running back Javon Ringer. On the positive side, Ringer ran for 185 yards on 12 carries — a 15.4 yard average — and three touchdowns. That total put him at more than 2,000 yards rushing in his MSU career, the 13th player to join that list. Ringer also led the team with six receptions, accounting for 54 yards.

Izzone leaders should be held accountable for changes

Once again, the Student Alumni Foundation has made changes to the Izzone. Before, the Izzone was divided into the yellow and purple sections, which were behind the baskets, and the green section, which stretched along the sideline. Normally, the green section was reserved for those who have been in the Izzone the longest. However, this year, SAF has made the lower bowl one section.

Helmets, field goals and touchdowns — certain things are always associated with the game of football. But on game day, something else comes to mind — tailgating. When it comes to Big Ten football games, the pre-game is just as important as what happens when the whistle blows.

MSU

Fair highlights living options

More than 1,000 students poured into the Union from noon-4 p.m. on Thursday to search for information about the various housing opportunities on and off campus.

Arab culture celebrated

With offerings of free cheese, meat and spinach pies, as well as printed T-shirts at the rock on Farm Lane on Thursday, the Arab Cultural Society, or ACS, hoped to make their presence known on campus.

Students lobby for new game cheer

The student section might sound a little different at Spartan Stadium on Saturday. A grassroots campaign spearheaded by political theory and constitutional democracy sophomore Jason Leva and other members of Spartantailgate.com Red Cedar Message Board are trying to start a new cheer based on the team’s mantra: “Pound Green, Pound.”
