E.L. finally gets a piece of the pie

Forget sexy. Mike Busley is bringing pie back. “If it weren’t for grandmas, I don’t know that we would know what real pie tastes like,” said Busley, founder of Grand Traverse Pie Company. “Unless grandma makes you one, the pie you’re buying at Meijer or Kroger was probably mass-produced in California and shipped to you on a freezer truck.”

FOOTBALL

It's showtime

While junior wide receiver Devin Thomas was busy fielding questions from the media about his four catch, 156-yard performance that included a touchdown last Saturday against Bowling Green, senior defensive end Ervin Baldwin made the receiver who was almost impossible to stop do just that.As Baldwin was exiting the press trailer, he exclaimed “showtime,” referring to Thomas’ nickname. The interjection prompted several questions aimed at the Spartans’ new big play threat.

FOOTBALL

Pass rush is defensive weapon

The dead bolt has been cut from the cage, and the dogs of the MSU defense are out hounding opposing quarterbacks this season. Bowling Green quarterback Tyler Sheehan felt the bite last Saturday, getting sacked seven times – giving MSU 12 total sacks in two games. Last season, the Spartans ended with only 16.

An old-school kind of guy

True patriotism not a fad, people ignorant of freedoms

Let me first thank Navy veteran Matt Patton for his service to our country. But his recent letter, Patriotism became a fad after terrorist attacks (SN 9/11), caused me some concern. Patton feels that following Sept. 11, 2001, patriotism gripped our nation and now fears its effects are wearing thin on the American public once again. But Patton is mistaken, for it was not patriotism that spread over the nation on Sept. 12 but rather nationalism. The American public did not revere in the principles upon which this nation was founded. Instead, people slapped stickers of flags on their cars while screaming, “My country, right or wrong!” This was not, and will never be, patriotism.

Pay attention to Afghanistan

Just over six years ago, the first major attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor left our citizens in a state of shock with subsequent waves of fear and anxiety. The country never seemed so united, behind a president who, back then, had a shred of credibility.

Officials: East village area project schedule on time

The editorial East Village project dragging on for too long (SN 9/4) included a number of misperceptions and misunderstandings about the East Village project. This project was conceived jointly by East Lansing and MSU, and we both are very committed to providing improved living opportunities within this new project for everyone. It will include graduate students, those seeking owner-occupied options and undergraduate students seeking to live, work and play in what is sure to become one of the most exciting attractions this region has seen.

Hollis promotion positive for MSU athletics

The choice by the MSU Board of Trustees to select Mark Hollis as the next athletics director was unanimous for a reason. The former associate athletics director for external relations has long been thought to be the successor to current Athletics Director Ron Mason and has been behind some of the biggest moves for MSU athletics in the past 10 years.

In or out: struggles with tuition policy

Amitesh Devic works, eats and sleeps in Lansing, and even pays taxes to the state that go toward funding for MSU. So he wants to know: Why is he considered an out-of-state student? Devic, who moved to the area in 2004 to live with his girlfriend, Amanda, pays more than $400 in additional tuition fees per credit hour than a student the university considers to be in-state.

The annoying fad: ringtones

They have become more popular than both songs and their music videos. So much so, that most record labels and MTV and BET, offer them. If you have not guessed yet, I’m talking about the recent obsession with ringtones.
