New players and new rules will dictate the beginning of the season for the MSU volleyball team. The Spartans, who held their annual Green and White game Saturday, only have three upperclassmen on the team this season and have been picked to finish eighth in the Big Ten.

Business booms with Welcome Week

In the midst of a struggling economy, Welcome Week provided a welcome boost in sales for several new businesses along East Grand River Avenue. Four businesses that opened since the close of spring classes saw a surge in clientele as MSU students settled in before the first week of classes, business owners said.

The media spotlight once again turns toward the Democratic Party as its members flock to Denver for its national convention. In addition to officially establishing the candidacy of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the convention — which occurs every four years — also will give a chance for the party to publicize to the nation exactly what it believes and the goals it will be striving to achieve in coming years.

Football center unveiled Thursday

Beyond the glitz of MSU’s new Skandalaris Football Center, a 25,000-square-foot, $15.5 million building expansion, the school’s rugged history was on display during the center’s unveiling Thursday. State-of-the art film technology, individual position meeting rooms and enough plasma TVs to fill an electronics store were overshadowed by the meeting of past and present MSU athletes.
