Team prepares for OSU series

MSU hockey head coach Rick Comley thinks his team’s recent schedule cluster is the toughest in the CCHA this season. After this weekend the Spartans will have played 12 conference games against three of the top four teams in the league­ — all of which are ranked in the top 20.

The MSU men’s basketball team’s side of the Berkowitz Basketball Complex was completely quiet earlier this week, as the No. 9 Spartans (20-4 overall, 10-2 Big Ten) were forced into shutdown mode by MSU head coach Tom Izzo.

Kivisto makes smooth transition to defense

Imagine spending your whole life dreaming of scoring goals and thinking up new moves to trick defensemen. Then imagine being flipped into the complete opposite role mid-season late in your hockey career. That’s exactly what forward-turned-defenseman Kurt Kivisto has done this season.

Atrocities reach across the aisle

Ah, the sweet fruit of change. How marvelous it is to have a president in the White House who challenges the oppressive systems that have held down the majority for so many years. While some of my less cynical cohorts bask in ejecting the militaristic former President George W. Bush from our nation’s highest office, I seem to be left virtually alone in my disgust at what should amount to scandal in a changed, better world.

Budget cuts should not target education

There are plenty of places to make cuts in the state budget, and many of Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s suggestions make sense. But the cuts to education — the largest proposed by Granholm — will continue to impede the state’s chances at an economic recovery.

Group could guide med schools in time of growth

A nationwide medical school expansion boom is causing institutions to re-evaluate how students are admitted and taught. Findings from a nationwide conference hosted last fall by the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation found medical schools should take advantage of what has been their first enrollment increase in 30 years by updating their teaching methods and changing admissions processes to be less based on standardized testing.

MSU Football player pleads guilty

MSU football player Mitchell White pleaded guilty to charges stemming from an off-campus brawl in October at a pretrial hearing Wednesday at East Lansing’s 54-B District Court. White, a freshman walk-on receiver, originally pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Dec. 23, 2008. White is set to be sentenced March 16, according to court documents.

Rivers near flood stage

Get out the rain boots, but don’t hang up that winter jacket just yet. Melting snow and rain have caused area rivers to reach near-flood stage, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flood warning for the Lansing area. Both the Red Cedar and Grand rivers are expected to hit flood stage sometime today.

Spartans ready for meet with No. 9 Florida

Fresh off two consecutive weekends of multiteam competition, the MSU gymnastics team will take on No. 9 Florida on Saturday in East Lansing, hoping to earn some valuable experience against a seasoned SEC opponent before heading back out on the road this month.

With Valentine’s Day approaching on Saturday, sex seems to be a hot topic, causing a breakout of lingerie deals and reservations at restaurants. But when it comes to lovemaking, it’s hard to believe the statistics and to ignore common misconceptions.
