Bidding farewell to the newspaper

When I wake up every morning and grab my perfectly healthy newspaper, I can’t help but think of how soon this helpless, defenseless thing will be lying on its deathbed. I can hear the persistent “beep, beep” of the heart monitors, see the slow trickle of fluid from IV bags and smell the pages of the newspaper decaying into a deathly yellow pallor.

Media ignores issues regarding Obama's budget plan, spending

The statement “Higher education appeared to be one of the winners in a national budget proposal Thursday that was full of spending cuts” in Student aid, research priorities in Obama’s budget (SN 2/27) is a poster child for the failure of journalism today in that it pays more attention to what President Barack Obama said was in the budget rather than what is actually in the budget.

Behind on bills

When he came to MSU last fall, criminal justice freshman Griffin McCarthy knew he would accumulate mounds of debt by the time he graduates. “I’m in a financial situation where my family can’t pay out-of-pocket for school,” McCarthy said. “I’m in a single-parent home, so some of the financial burden is too much.”

Spring break then and now

For the past four decades, spring break has offered Michigan college students an escape from the stress of classes, work and the unrelenting winter elements. While the motivation to seek sun, adventure and even a few risks has prevailed, the prices and hot spots of spring break have changed over time. Where will Spartans head this year when spring break kicks off in less than one week? No matter the locale, spring break continues to be a memorable part of the college experience at MSU.
