Nobel Prize-winning activist will address spring grads

The man known as South Africa’s Martin Luther King Jr. will deliver the university’s keynote speech at spring commencement. Desmond Tutu, a South African activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, is scheduled to speak at 1 p.m. May 8 at Breslin Center. The event will be free to the public.

A 41-year-old Lansing man who unintentionally flagged down an MSU police officer Friday morning was eventually arrested for stealing another man’s debit card, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

RHA, Impact await vote on tax funding

Two student organizations’ futures rely on a campuswide student vote this week. The Residence Halls Association and Impact (89-FM) each charge a student tax that the organizations rely almost completely on for funding. Every three years, each tax referendum goes before a student vote to determine whether the taxes continue.

Next week, MSU junior Jack Newman will venture to Augusta, Georgia, for the premiere golf event in the world: the Masters Tournament. Newman will walk in the footsteps of Jack, Arnie, Tiger and Lefty — men who made their names at the famed Augusta National Golf Club.

MSU senior Megan O’Brien will spend part of her summer taking a crash course in community organizing. O’Brien, a social relations and policy and urban and regional planning senior, was accepted into the Direct Action and Research Training Center, or DART, Organizers Institute.

Exonerated man shares story of arrest

Kenneth Wyniemko spent almost 10 years in prison for rape and robbery crimes he was later cleared of. On Tuesday, Wyniemko spoke to MSU professor Zach Hambrick’s psychology class about his time in jail, fighting for his innocence.

2000 team took program to new heights

Fresh off making his first Final Four in 1999, MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo knew the 2000 season had the chance to be even more special. With nearly every key player returning for his senior season — including Mateen Cleaves, Morris Peterson and A.J. Granger — Izzo felt his team had the talent, experience and toughness to win a national championship.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported recently that unemployment is at the highest rate in 26 years. MSU students have felt the impact as fewer recruiters come to campus and less positions are offered.

Izzone members deserve to be at Final Four

MSU’s victory against Louisville for a position in the Final Four naturally caused excitement among Izzone members. As a reward for their dedication to the MSU men’s basketball team — camping out for season tickets, standing throughout the duration of games and coming up with a variety of loud, colorful cheers — the Izzone had a chance to purchase tickets to Saturday’s national semifinal game in Detroit against the University of Connecticut.
