City Council approves resurfacing of Mt. Hope

Mount Hope Road might soon see an $800,000 face-lift after the East Lansing City Council approved a state-funded revitalization at Tuesday’s meeting. The City Council approved a bid from the Michigan Department of Transportation, or MDOT, to reconstruct the road from the city’s eastern limits to its western ones at its 7 p.m. meeting Tuesday at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road.

E.L. explosion under police investigation

An apparent man-made explosion that occurred at about noon Tuesday near the corner of Michigan Avenue and Center Street is under investigation by the East Lansing Police Department. Police are searching for the person who put an explosive device in the parking lot between Cron Management, 117 Center St., and Harrison Roadhouse, 720 Michigan Ave.

Weeding out the issue

With the automobile industry in shambles, Danny Trevino said Michigan needs a new identity. To him, that identity is medical marijuana. “There are two other states that are going to capitalize (on it) in the country,” he said. “It’s either going to be Michigan or California. Michigan deserves it. We have nothing, and medical marijuana is a nice way out.”

E.L. Catholic community merges into 1 parish

St. John Student Parish will become a chapel in a unified East Lansing parish July 1, but the Diocese of Lansing said the student community isn’t going anywhere. The chapel, located at 327 M.A.C. Ave., will be renamed St. John Student Center.

Cancer rally pushes for smoke-free Mich.

Kinesiology senior Kelly Montgomery has been battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma on and off for seven years. Montgomery was diagnosed at 16, and after six rounds of chemotherapy and two rounds of radiation, she went into remission hoping to live her life cancer-free.

MSU bike registration policy unfair, needs revamping

On May 21, I rode my bike to the MSU Veterinary Medical Center. After a long day, I walked outside to discover that someone had stolen my bike! I walked inside the clinic to get the number of the campus police from the receptionist, only to find out that she had seen an MSU truck with numerous bikes on a trailer pass by.

There’s a lot of people in this world I don’t like. The list gets bigger almost every day. If I bothered to keep track, it would probably be in the thousands by now. No person — no matter how unimportant — is exempt from appearing as part of my running tally.

Privilege shouldn't affect admissions process

It’s one of the many unfair aspects of life, but the people with the best connections tend to get the best treatment. The University of Illinois is no different. The university has suspended its controversial Category I admissions process in wake of a Chicago Tribune report that the school gave preferential treatment to applicants with more clout.

Two laptops, valued at $250 each, were reported stolen between 5 p.m. Thursday and 9:45 a.m. Friday from the Club Spartan Room in Case Hall, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

City Center II project up for 4th extension

A $116 million redevelopment project will be up for its fourth extension at tonight’s East Lansing City Council work session. The City Center II project, which is a mixed-use project slated for the corner of Abbot Road and Grand River Avenue, is scheduled to be discussed at the 7 p.m. meeting at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road.
