GM, Ford stalling despite good sales
Like many other Michigan residents, I know or am related to a lot of people who are a part of the struggling automotive industry. So, like many other Michigan residents, I was excited when I heard that the two leading American automakers — Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. — had increased their sales in the month of January, compared to the same month a year earlier.

Speaking after Thursday’s practice, MSU head coach Tom Izzo called Kalin Lucas “very, very questionable” for Saturday’s 9 p.m. game at Illinois, but said because the junior guard’s playing is contingent mostly on how he feels, Izzo said it remains a possibility.

Police brief 2/4/10
A 24-year-old East Lansing man reported damage to his car in Lot 32 on Friday, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The man said someone broke the back passenger window between 3:50 and 8:30 p.m. in his 2001 Chevy Prizm. The damage is estimated to be $300, McGlothian-Taylor said.

2009 donations decline at MSU, across country
Donations to MSU in 2009 fell 4 percent from the previous year, but the drop was lower than the Big Ten average, according to a survey released Wednesday. The report, released by the Council for Aid to Education, or CAE, found the national average in giving decreased 12 percent between July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2009. The Big Ten averaged about a 10 percent decrease. More than 1,000 institutions participated in the survey.

For MSU head football coach Mark Dantonio, becoming a consistent team in the Big Ten means adding top-tier talent throughout the course of several seasons. Dantonio introduced his second straight top-30 recruiting class Wednesday at National Signing Day and was excited about the potential of the 21 incoming players.

Students rally to support higher education
Fumiko Sakashita is on her own. Like many other international students at MSU, Sakashita, an American studies doctoral student, looked forward to being a teaching assistant to help pay for continuing her education. However, in light of the recent budget cuts at MSU, her goal seems less likely to pan out.

Granholm: Restore Mich. Promise
Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm said during her eighth and final State of the State address Wednesday she will reinstate the Michigan Promise Scholarship in her budget proposal for the 2010-11 fiscal year. In her speech at the Capitol in Lansing, the governor said she will fund the scholarship, restructuring it to keep graduates in Michigan. However, she did not reveal how she plans to fund it.

Detroit groups, MSU aim to 'green' metro
The vacant lots and abandoned houses of Detroit’s urban landscape could turn into green pastures soon. MSU started a partnership with the Greening of Detroit, a Detroit-based nonprofit organization aimed at encouraging environmental awareness in Detroit, Capuchin Soup Kitchen’s Earthworks Garden and the Detroit Agriculture Network to create the Garden Resource Program Collaborative.

Business college hopes to grow with new dean
After months of searching, MSU’s Eli Broad College of Business will have a chance to break new ground if Stefanie Lenway is approved as the new dean. Lenway, currently the dean of the University of Illinois at Chicago, or UIC, College of Business Administration, would be the first female dean in the history of MSU’s Eli Broad College of Business.

Anthony Jones Jr. has been a stable presence in the middle of the MSU wrestling team’s lineup. The 157-pound junior has fought in several close matches this season, defeating Minnesota’s Joe Grygelko, 3-1, and West Virginia’s Kyle Eason, 6-2.
