Spartan keeps it 'green' on red carpet

It’s not every day something that started as a class project wins you a trip to the Oscars, but for Jillian Granz, this slim chance has become a reality. Granz will be meeting “Avatar” director James Cameron and his wife Suzy Amis Cameron when she leaves for Los Angeles this month as part of her grand prize for winning Red Carpet Green Dress, a global dress design competition.

Journalists, scientists should cover climate science truthfully

The goal of science is to gain enough understanding of causal interconnections so that we can make deliberate changes in those connections to produce desirable outcomes for our lives. Climate science, however, has evidenced a toxic quality in the climategate and glaciergate scandals that have undermined its credibility and distorted the journalism reporting climate change.

Student involvement shouldn't stop with logo change

Despite the movement toward change in the U.S., change will not come to MSU in the form of a logo. A revised logo found on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Web site a few weeks ago was met with large public outcry and protesting. Athletics Director Mark Hollis announced in an open letter Friday that “after careful consideration,” the athletics department will use the current Spartans logo design “to build (MSU’s) visual brand identity.” Although many students are excited their beloved logo will not be tampered with, others are excited to see their voices being heard.

Snowfall causes at least 20 accidents in E.L.

Steady snowfall has created slippery roads in the Lansing area, causing numerous accidents. Nathan Jeruzal, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, said heavy snow has created slippery roads, and predicted another 6 inches of snow will fall by the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Bernero announces run for governor

Democrats finally have their first serious contender for the 2010 governor’s race. Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero officially announced his gubernatorial candidacy Monday to replace term-limited Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, visiting Detroit and Grand Rapids before ending his first campaign tour at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave.

Grad conference planned for Feb. 19

The Graduate Conference III will be held from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Union. The free event will focus on performances and panels on concentrations in the college of Arts and Letters.
