Corn to get a boost in vitamin A

Taking vitamins is important. And in a few years, taking corn might be too. Dean DellaPenna, a microbiology and molecular genetics professor, worked with a team of 20 scientists and several organizations to add more beta-carotene, or vitamin A, to corn.

MSU club hosts flavor-tripping party

Shawn Targosz never experienced anything like it before. Lemons tasted like the sweetest candy ever, and a Guinness beer tasted more like a chocolate malt. Targosz attended a flavor-tripping party Wednesday night at Reno’s East Side Sportsbar & Grill, 1310 Abbot Road. The MSU Outdoors Club hosted its first flavor-tripping party as a fundraiser and promotion for the Banff Mountain Film Festival it is hosting April 7.

MSU to participate in Earth Hour 2010

Campus could get a little darker at 8:30 p.m Saturday as students are asked to shut down any unnecessary power for one hour. The event is part of Earth Hour 2010, which aims to increase awareness of climate change.

Higher education rally this week

MSU students could be among participants at the Our Higher Education Rally noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Capitol as part of a statewide effort organized by the Student Association of Michigan, or SAM.

Businesses prepare for smoke-free air

Michigan restaurant and bar owners are trying to clear the air before the state’s smoke-free law takes effect May 1. The new law, passed by lawmakers in December, prohibits smoking in all workplaces including restaurants and bars, and the owners of East Lansing hangouts are anticipating the change.

MSU will be hosting the Michigan Clean Energy Forum at 2 p.m. April 10. The theme “Jobs and the Clean Energy Race” will include panelists from various job sectors including several faculty members from MSU.

About 30 students gathered Wednesday at the Hillel Student Jewish Center, 360 Charles St., for an Ice Cream Seder night to get into the holiday mood for the upcoming Passover Seder on Monday.

Hawthorne remake hits Arena theater stage

It’s the setting of The Department of Theatre’s production of “In the Blood,” written by Suzan-Lori Parks, opened on Tuesday night at the Auditorium Arena Theatre and runs through Sunday.

But how many students actually will take the time to learn about other cultures that they see bits and pieces of each day?

ASMSU members are taking steps to provide students with sorely needed funding during these uncertain economic times. Any amount of money — even $3,000 — can go far toward a person’s future. Compared to previous half-baked ASMSU expenses on student taxpayer money, this scholarship serves a much higher purpose and will have the potential to assist all students at a greater level.

Instructor receives probation in sex case

An MSU instructor was sentenced to six months probation Wednesday for accosting a child with immoral purposes. Takashi Higuchi was charged in November 2009 with third degree sexual conduct after he met a 13-year-old girl on an Internet dating Web site for adults and allegedly had consensual sex with her.

City Council discusses car-sharing, transportation projects

The Lansing region could attract federal funds for a large scale transportation project, as announced by a Capital Area Transportation Authority official at East Lansing City Council’s work session Tuesday. Council also discussed a plan to bring a fleet of environmentally friendly and efficient cars to be rented by residents to the city as part of a car-sharing program.
