Counselors partner at Big Ten conference

The Big Ten Counseling Centers Conference kicked off Wednesday at Kellogg Center. The conference brings together staff and students who work at counseling centers at schools in the 11 Big Ten universities and other institutions for collaboration sessions.

MSU athletes give area preschoolers a taste of sports

Preschoolers had the chance on Wednesday to ask Spartan athletes the important questions: How often do you practice?What do you eat? And, most importantly, what is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Women’s basketball player Mandy Piechowski and track and field athletes Max Goldak and Elizabeth Rohl spoke to about 70 preschoolers at Spartan Childhood Development Center, 1730 Crescent Road, about their sports and answered questions.

Symposium set for next month

The 15th annual Quiet Water Symposium is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 6 at the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education. The symposium, which is part of Agriculture and Natural Resources Week at MSU, offers participants the chance to learn about human-powered outdoor recreation equipment and activities

Schools set to use new garden tools

Michigan schools will be first in the nation to use new virtual gardening tools at MSU’s Indoor 4-H Children’s Garden on Friday. MSU Extension, or MSUE, partnered with the Michigan Department of Education to give 20 Michigan school administrators the opportunity to learn how to plant a school garden and then harvest the produce for use in the cafeteria.

Homecoming Court nominations open

Nominations and applications for the 2010 Homecoming Court now are being accepted. Departments, units and organizations at MSU are encouraged to make nominations, but MSU faculty, staff and students are allowed to nominate as well.

E.L. should pay county 911 center's legacy costs

A new deal has been made to consolidate Ingham County’s two 911 call centers. The project will save the county $6 million throughout a 10-year period and will combine the two centers in East Lansing and Lansing into one. Construction is slated to begin early this spring. And, despite the county’s savings, East Lansing officials aren’t happy about their financial obligations.

Society can give power to symbols

Often when people look at symbols, they find a general meaning has been given to them. Without that significance, the symbol merely is an inanimate object that almost is invisible to the eyes of society. But what is it that gives a symbol meaning? Is it the way it looks? Is it where it is founded or built? Is its meaning and significance based off of one person’s perception?

Trekking to Timbuktu

Fourteen years after Chris Berggren and friends traveled to Timbuktu — bribing officials at the Mali Embassy for visas, staying the night on the porch of a brothel and riding a construction boat down the Niger River along the way — the MSU alumnus has written a book he hopes will inspire new travelers.

New plan for City Center II to be discussed

As the City Center II development hits the East Lansing Planning Commission’s agenda for a public hearing, city officials and committee members expect a long conference, as commentators come to the 7 p.m. Wednesday meeting at 54-B District Court, 101 Linden St., to discuss the $116.4 million project.

Vigil held to mourn U.S. casualties

About 20 people gathered at the intersection of Grand River Avenue and Abbot Road for a vigil marking the 1,000th U.S. troop death in Afghanistan. The Peace Education Center and the Greater Lansing Network Against War and Injustice organized the event.
