Student group displays Indian culture in event

The Indian Student Organization, or ISO, performed its sixth annual Sargam on Saturday at MacDonald Middle School in East Lansing. Sargam, which means “melody” in Hindi, is a celebration of Indian culture and includes singing and dancing.

Far from finished

Early last week, Jacquie Joseph sat in Jenison Field House looking out her office window. Joseph, 47 years old and now in her 17th year as MSU’s softball coach, has won more than 500 games at MSU and, presumably, can stay at the helm for as long as she wants.

Gophers win Sunday, MSU takes 2-of-3

Right-handed starter Tony Bucciferro was excellent on the hill for the Spartans through six innings, but racked up five earned runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings as the Spartans lost a late 3-2 lead.

MSU wins 1st conference match vs. Penn State

The MSU women’s tennis hadn’t won a Big Ten match heading into Sunday’s match against Penn State but looked a far cry from the 0-6 conference team it was entering Sunday, getting a gritty 6-1 win that featured two third-set singles match victories.

Marathon kicks off fashion week

The Student Apparel Design Association, or SADA, hosted a High Heel Marathon at noon on Sunday, where participants ran from the corner of M.A.C. Avenue and Elizabeth Street and finished at the corner of Beech Street while wearing their most fashionable footwear.

Unpaid internships unfair to students

As a journalism major living in Michigan, I know how difficult it can be in today’s economy to find not only a job, but also a suitable internship beforehand — especially an internship that doesn’t involve just going on coffee runs for the staff or taking out the trash in exchange for college credit.

Police searching for Flagstar armed robbery suspect

East Lansing police responded to a report of a bank robbery at about 4:30 p.m. Friday at Flagstar Bank, 1400 E. Lake Lansing Rd. The suspect was described as a black male, about 20 years old and of medium height. He was wearing blue jeans, a black hooded sweatshirt, a gold baseball cap and sunglasses.

A renewable debate

The T.B. Simon Power Plant burns 250,000 tons of coal per year and has caught the attention of campus groups and students. Some push for more renewable sources of energy and argue that MSU should be even more green. Others, such as school officials say clean energy technology is not advanced or efficient enough to justify making the switch, and say the move would be too risky.

Students discuss violence at murder mystery dinner

On Thursday night, about 80 students filtered into the Four Deuces, a speakeasy set up in Akers cafeteria, to participate in a murder mystery dinner. The event was part of the NASPA-Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education “Enough is Enough” campaign to stop violence, specifically violence on college campuses and schools.

Breslin's son to run for Board of Trustees

The son of the man for whom Breslin Center is named officially is seeking the Republican nomination for the MSU Board of Trustees, running on a platform that includes maintaining affordable tuition and enhancing research at the university. Brian Breslin, a 59-year-old retired Meijer executive and MSU alumnus, is one of three Republicans seeking the nomination.

New Mexican restaurant to open in May

Señor Georgio’s, which is set to open at 403 E. Grand River Ave. this spring, will fill the vacant space next to Starbucks, where eatery Brother’s Grill closed more than two months ago. Current Georgio’s Gourmet Pizzeria owners Vackis Nicolau and Tasos Alimonos plan to implement traditional Greek and Italian flavors into a Mexican menu.

Granholm praises film credit incentive

Two years after the debut of Michigan’s film incentive program, Gov. Jennifer Granholm praised the program’s success in her weekly radio address. The film incentive program, which grants film producers a refundable tax credit of up to 42 percent of production expenses, was signed into law by Granholm in April 2008.

Campus organizations elections end

Spring elections for campus organizations concluded at noon Thursday. After a computer glitch caused polls to close early Monday, MSU officials reopened voting Thursday for four student governance bodies: ASMSU, Council of Graduate Students, or COGS, Owen Graduate Association and Council of Medical Students.
