Columnist's opinion of soccer fans promotes stereotypes

I was appalled when I read Craig Gunn’s column (Soccer deserves a better class of fan,” SN 6/21) about soccer fans. Was he being serious? Soccer is the sport of the world — like it or not. Name one other single sport that can bring so many nations together in celebration, and yes, even fights.

MSU plans to spend nearly $500,000 for a complete makeover — hair, nails, the works. Specifically, it wants to project a consistent image. To create that image, it has asked alumni across the country and world to submit stories of their contributions and accomplishments.

Tornado watch issued for Ingham County

A tornado watch has been issued for Ingham County until 1 a.m. Thursday, said Walt Felver, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids. East Lansing-area residents should be more concerned with heavy rain and gusty thunderstorms throughout the next few hours, Felver said.

Mich. improves to 2nd-worst state for unemployment

After more than four years at the bottom of the list, Michigan has shed the dubious distinction of being the state with the highest unemployment rate in the country. Nevada took the top spot for the month of May with 14 percent unemployment, according to a report released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a federal organization that tracks labor economics and other statistics. Michigan had the second-highest rate with 13.6 percent unemployment, followed by California with 12.4 percent.

Locals pucker up for photography project

Lansing’s Old Town puckered up for the SMOOCH! Project at the Perspective2 Studio, 319 E. Grand River Ave., in Lansing, on Tuesday in an effort to reduce violence through human affection. The SMOOCH! Project is a documentary record of the human demonstration to willingly share and welcome love and affection with no regard to social, economic or political boundaries.

Ronald McDonald House in Lansing celebrates 10th anniversary

The Ronald McDonald House is a building that can house up to eight families at once, said Lisa Gnass, Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan executive director. The house celebrated its 10th anniversary of operation Tuesday afternoon in Lansing. The anniversary event featured an open house for the public, refreshments and a silent auction. Additionally, leaders from the Lansing community, such as state Rep. Joan Bauer, D-Lansing, gathered to speak.

Preserving Morrill Hall should be a priority

The proposed demolition of 110-year-old Morrill Hall is bittersweet. The $38 million project, which includes adding onto Wells Hall and renovating the Old Horticulture Building, is scheduled to begin in September, when construction on Wells is slated to start.

Jones and Rijpma named MSU Athletes of the Year

Recognized for their excellence on the playing field last season, MSU football linebacker Greg Jones and field hockey midfielder Floor Rijpma were named the George Alderton Male and Female Athletes of the Year, MSU announced Monday. The award is given to the top male and female Spartan athlete at the end of each year.

MSU has launched a nearly $500,000 advertising campaign aimed at using storied from across the worldwide Spartan community as a promotional point for the university. The first phase of the campaign included print ads across the U.S. and Internet marketing. The second phase, set to launch in mid-July, will use videos to tell stories about how the university has influenced lives across the globe.

Board OK's $38M project for Morrill, Wells halls

The MSU Board of Trustees on Friday approved a $38 million plan to demolish the 110-year-old Morrill Hall and add onto the B Wing of Wells Hall. The plan, which also includes money to renovate the Old Horticulture Building, will relocate several academic departments.
