It is time for new leaders to step up

There is a proportional relationship between how lame politicians are and how lame the discussion becomes on cable television. This mathematical truth is most evident in a midterm election. Along with unrealistic promises and yelling comes a media culture that encourages bad behavior.

Ban on K2 is a politically expedient overreaction

State Rep. Justin Amash, R-Cascade, said it all with a simple and single “nay” concerning the ban on the synthetic cannabinoid K2 last Thursday. Amash hit the nail on the head when he wrote in his Facebook status that despite health concerns, using the substance constituted a victimless crime and that banning it should not be the government’s priority.

Officials commemorate grants awarded to MSU for Great Lakes research

Government and university officials gathered in the MSU Board Room Friday to celebrate the announcement of $1.8 million in Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grants for Michigan. MSU researchers have been awarded more than $3 million to educate health care providers about Great Lakes fish, manage harmful algae and forecast beach and near-shore health effects, among other projects.

Bearing the burden

MSU is ranked second in the Big Ten in terms of median student debt; nationally, it ranks eighth in terms of total debt. As financial constraints take center stage along with global economic woes, students and experts are looking for ways to abate the effects of accruing student debt.

A 19-year-old female student had her laptop stolen out of her bedroom in the 10 minutes she was gone to take a shower, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Big Ten, Big Opportunities

The No. 15 MSU men’s soccer team found some added motivation before the season began after the team was projected to finish fifth in the conference in a preseason poll. The Spartans are the highest-ranked team in the Big Ten in the top 25 poll and aren’t looking back, moving toward their goal of the 2010 Big Ten Championship.

Cousins beginning to find form

After Kirk Cousins started all but one game for the MSU football team last season, expectations were high for the junior quarterback heading into 2010. Three games into the new season though, it has been the MSU running game that has paced the Spartans and led them to a 3-0 start and No. 25 ranking in The Associated Press poll.

Hubbard Hall celebrates renovations

After a summer of renovations to Hubbard Hall’s interior, university officials ushered in a new phase of MSU’s living and learning experience, presenting it to the public during a grand opening event Thursday afternoon. Changes made to the hall is the first step in MSU’s plan to expand the Neighborhood Concept pilot project.
