MSU professor nominated for Grammy
MSU professor and Zimbabwe native Isaac Kalumbu, who is a professor of ethnomusicology, was nominated for best reggae album for the 2011 Grammy Awards earlier this month. He said his music career might change forever. The album, “Isaacs meets Isaac,” was released in March and features 12 songs in the lovers rock genre.

Spartans prepared for zone defense of No. 8 Syracuse
On Monday men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo explained that Tuesday’s game against No. 8 Syracuse, which almost exclusively plays a 2-3 zone on defense, will be another style for his players to experience before possibly facing it in March.

In a letter to the editor published Oct. 31 (“Zoology students’ letter was misleading, accusatory?” SN 10/31), Joel Sparks failed to mention some very important points. The numbers of drug-resistant infections have increased in the past two decades and are killing about 70,000 Americans a year.

In East Lansing these days, there’s no shortage of people with gripes about the Bowl Championship Series, or BCS, and its role in keeping our football team from a BCS bowl game. Rarely, though, is there coverage of how we came to be the lowest ranked BCS team out of the Big Ten co-champions behind Wisconsin and the Ohio State University.

A driver in an accident that killed five and injured an MSU student was found to have traces of marijuana in his system, the Green Oak Charter Township Police Department said. A toxicology report shows Okemos resident Matthew Kolstoe tested positive for cannabinoids and THC.

The No. 7 MSU football team will spend the holidays in Orlando, Fla., for the third time in four seasons to play against No. 15 Alabama in the Capital One Bowl, MSU announced Sunday.

I know the system is a joke. I know it makes no sense to send an 11-1 Big Ten championship team that’s ranked No. 7 in the country to the Capital One Bowl, the same bowl it played in two years ago when it had a 9-3 record and finished behind Penn State and Ohio State in the conference.

Man accused of student's murder fit to stand trial
Lansing resident David Marion Jr. has been declared fit to stand trial in front of a judge for the alleged murder of finance freshman Darren Brown, according to a letter from the state’s Center for Forensic Psychiatry.

For the second consecutive game, the No. 25 MSU women’s basketball team (7-1) took on a ranked opponent. Perhaps out of their element, No. 17 Texas traveled to the chilly state of Michigan for a showdown with MSU and were defeated, 71-57.

MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo long has used the anyone, any place, any time thought process when putting together his team’s schedule. But after Saturday’s 74-39 win against Bowling Green at Breslin Center, Izzo said he is a little concerned with how the constant traveling to play big games is affecting his players.
