Spartans to regroup against efficient, well-coached Badgers

Going into Saturday’s game at Penn State, it appeared the MSU men’s basketball team finally was back on the fast track to a third-straight conference championship after a difficult start to the season. The Spartans were 2-0 in conference play, and other than the final two minutes of their win against Northwestern last Monday, they were playing some of their best basketball of the season. Then, after what head coach Tom Izzo described as the best week of practice he could remember in the last 10 years, a completely different MSU team showed up Saturday at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pa., and lost, 66-62, to Penn State. At his weekly press conference Monday, Izzo couldn’t explain why his team was unable to translate its good practice habits into a game. But Izzo said 7 p.m.

The Snyder Effect

Gov. Rick Snyder, who took office Jan. 1, repeatedly has said K-12 and higher education and retaining young people in the state are priorities for his administration. But until Snyder releases concrete numbers as part of his budget recommendations, the extent of his commitment to higher education is speculation.

Break-ins, house fire occur during break

It’s been a rough couple weeks for Trinidad Esparza-Magañan and his roommates. On Dec. 30, 2010, the media and communication technology and food industry management senior reported a home invasion at his house. A week and a half later, at 3:18 a.m. Sunday morning, a fire broke out in their kitchen and spread to the rest of their house.

Donation to benefit MSU accounting

Because of one man’s work, the MSU Accounting and Information Systems Department recently received a $500,000 donation to its programs. PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, or PwC, announced in December 2010 it will contribute the money throughout a period of five years to the department.

State lawmakers last month wrapped up the legislative session by passing numerous of bills and meeting a handful of times before officially adjourning — but not before repealing penalties for possession and use of several drugs.

Time for paper to think digital

I feel this is usually the column that talks about needing more columnists and more letters. We do — we always do. Even when I have enough, there needs to be more. The page needs as many views on as many topics as possible. As one of the fundamental tenets of democracy, I’m of the opinion this page should reflect that ideal.
