Muslim community prepares for new year

For Muslim students across campus, the new year rings in with reflections of personal growth and prayer instead of noise-makers and kisses at midnight. The local Islamic community is preparing for the Islamic New Year on Tuesday.

MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo long has used the anyone, any place, any time thought process when putting together his team’s schedule. But after Saturday’s 74-39 win against Bowling Green at Breslin Center, Izzo said he is a little concerned with how the constant traveling to play big games is affecting his players.

Gospel choir sings at church event

Swaying back and forth and clapping their hands in time, members of the MSU Gospel Choir moved to the music they sang Friday evening. The choir was among several groups that performed at Worship 2010 at St. Paul Lutheran Church and Worship International Church, 3383 Lake Lansing Road.

After attending the Westboro Baptist Church’s protest outside East Lansing High School, I walked away having a newfound respect for the WBC and a newfound dislike for my fellow students and neighbors who had happily congealed into the spiteful mass opposing the WBC members.

Increased fee necessary for tattoo parlors

The same week Michigan legislators passed laws related to HIV testing, they also attempted to address the regulation of an industry that can put patrons at increased risk of contracting blood-borne pathogens. The bill, which passed in both houses, would require tattoo parlors to pay an annual fee of $500. For tattoo parlors, it means an annual increase of about $333 from the previous licensing fee­ — $500 every three years.

Hundreds of vendors showcase holiday gifts for UAB crafts show

The 47th annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Show transformed the Union into a haven for holiday knickknacks. The show was organized by the University Activities Board, or UAB, and showcased about 200 exhibitors selling an array of Christmas and winter-themed items, including personalized holiday ornaments, home-decorating merchandise and jewelry.

Icers fall to Ferris State in overtime

For more than 60 minutes, the MSU hockey team answered everything a fast No. 20 Ferris State team threw at it. But with 1:06 remaining in overtime, Ferris State defenseman Chad Billins’ deflected goal lifted the Bulldogs to a 1-0 overtime victory.

After nearly 16 years of serving the university, the tenures MSU Trustees Colleen McNamara and Don Nugent are coming to an end. The trustees, who lost their re-election bids this year, say they have little to no regrets when considering their combined experience guiding the university.

Author gives lecture on feminism, meat

After Carol J. Adams’ pony was shot and killed, she had a realization that shaped her life. More than 150 students and community members attended Adams’ Sexual Politics of Meat Slideshow and Lecture Thursday evening in South Kedzie Hall, where Adams spoke of her philosophies.
