Spartans prep for new-look Hawkeyes

After traveling through a snowstorm to take on Iowa at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Iowa City, Iowa, the MSU men’s basketball team will be welcomed by a new-look Hawkeyes team. Typically a team that prefers to milk every second of the shot clock before firing a shot, first-year head coach Fran McCaffery has Iowa playing a slightly different style. “They’re more up and down,” MSU senior guard Kalin Lucas said.

Students rejoice for snow day

Criminal justice sophomore Evan Toyzan had just finished his class near the natural science building when he heard two words ring across campus: “Snow day!” Toyzan didn’t believe the student at first, but as he walked across campus, he heard more and more talk about the canceled classes and the day off. “I heard it might happen but I didn’t think it was going to happen,” Toyzan said. MSU Provost Kim Wilcox announced at about 3:15 p.m.

Shooting investigation continues

No warrants have been issued and no arrests have been made in the investigation of the shooting that took place Saturday at Crossing Place Apartments, 3636 Coleman Road, but the Bath Township police department is looking into a few leads, Bath Township police Chief Scott Rose said. Rose confirmed the person injured in the shooting was an 18-year-old man from Oak Park, Mich., and his injury was non-fatal.

Snowfall expected to bury E.L., MSU

The MSU and East Lansing communities are gearing up for what meteorologists say could be one of the worst snow storms to hit Mid-Michigan in more than 30 years. Twelve or more inches of snow — coupled with potential wind gusts of 40 mph and wind chill of 20 or more degrees below zero — are expected to bury the central and south central portions of the state starting early this morning. Several inches are expected to fall throughout today ahead of the storm, which is expected to continue into Wednesday morning.

Interim dean to begin position

Doug Buhler, the new interim dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, officially will start his position today, as former dean Jeffrey Armstrong begins his presidency position at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Buhler formerly was the associate dean of the college, associate director of MSU AgBioResearch and a professor of crop and soil sciences.
