Representatives from ASMSU’s Academic Assembly were brought up to speed regarding details of the organization’s current and future relationship with academic governance. ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government. Representatives were given a packet of information that details the differences between the current Academic Assembly and the future General Assembly so, when faced with questions from administrators, representatives would feel comfortable responding. “There’s a large amount of confusion among faculty and administrators of what this change and restructuring means for them,” said Zachary Taylor, interim chair for Academic Assembly, during the meeting. Some of the confusion stems from bylaws in academic governance that clearly stipulate representation from distinctly named Academic and Student assemblies. Documentation in the packet given to representatives reads, “In consultation with the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Services, we propose that an agreement be established to temporarily allow the General Assembly of ASMSU to appoint student representatives until such a time as the By-Laws are amended.” Administrators also have expressed concern regarding ASMSU filing for nonprofit status.
