State surplus chance to impact education

Public universities in Michigan have been used to cuts in state funding, but a surplus in the state budget could mean a turn for the better. This week, State Budget Director John Nixon will meet with fiscal agencies and the state treasury to discuss how the $400 million to $450 million left over from this year’s budget will be allocated. State officials have neither confirmed nor denied if any of the money will be given to higher education, but MSU would welcome more state money.

The road less traveled

Brandon Wood left a lasting impression on the MSU men’s basketball team two years before he ever put on his No. 30 Spartan jersey. Then a sophomore at Valparaiso, the 6-foot-2 combo guard played against MSU on Nov. 22, 2009 at Breslin Center. Despite the Crusaders walking away on the wrong end of a 90-60 final score, Wood stood out with his 24 points and 9-for-ten free throw shooting.

Association questions Teach for America

Teach for America received a record number of more than 48,000 applications for fall 2011 — but some education critics have said they feel it does not provide graduates with enough training before they enter the workforce.

Rush named FWAA Freshman All-American

After recording 12 tackles for loss and four sacks this season, MSU defensive end Marcus Rush has been named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. Rush joins defensive tackle Jerel Worthy, who recently declared for the NFL Draft, and three other players — kicker Brett Swenson, linebacker Greg Jones and offensive guard Joel Foreman — as the five Spartans to be named FWAA All-Americans in the last six years.

Two support groups developed for sexual assault victims

Beginning this January, victims of sexual assault will have two new support groups to turn to. In the wake of a changing federal definition of rape, the MSU Sexual Assault Program created two groups this spring: Hope and Healing, a support group for women, and Men’s Group, a program directed toward male victims.
