Simon’s speech addresses issues with state funding

The university’s 157-year history came full circle Tuesday with a glance at the past to prepare for a future resting on shaky financial ground. MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon discussed the highlights of her 2012 State of the University report at the annual MSU Awards Convocation at Wharton Center’s Pasant Theatre. She said at the school’s inception in 1855, the institution had to academically compete with the brand names — universities already established before MSU.

E.L., MSU workout facilities see increased use

Students have been swarming the gym during the past month, with more than 2,000 gym memberships to the IM Sports facilities sold since the beginning of January. January and February are the two busiest months of the year for recreational facilities on campus, which is partly attributed to students preparing for spring break and participating in a campus fitness challenge, Recreational Sports and Fitness Services Director Rick McNeil said.

Whitney Houston remembered fondly by students, professor

In November 2011, while on the set of Whitney Houston’s upcoming film “Sparkle,” Houston and several of her co-stars stood together, waiting for the next scene. Also on the set that day was Kelley Carter, an MSU and State News alumna and current entertainment reporter, who was interviewing Houston for Ebony Magazine. Carter said what she saw that day was one of the most telling aspects of Houston’s personality.

When Kelli Wall noticed in high school other sprinters who were smaller than her running faster than she was, she thought the only way to keep up was to slim down. “Their time would be less than mine, and I seriously felt that losing weight would affect my time, and my agility and my speed would get faster,” the dietetics sophomore said.

Alexi Knock easily can pinpoint a bro in a crowd. In an article she wrote for College Magazine, Knock, a journalism and political science junior at Hofstra University, defined a bro as a male, age 17-24, who can often be seen sporting a lacrosse pinny and cheap sunglasses from the 90s.

MSU sees benefits from outdoor hockey events

More than a decade ago on a chilly Saturday in October 2001, 74,544 fans witnessed the start of a phenomenon. In an event historically catered to the NHL and the bright lights of a more prominent venue, Spartan Stadium hosted the Cold War hockey game between MSU and Michigan. The game, which ended in a 3-3 tie between the heated in-state rivals, set milestones for the largest crowd at an ice hockey game and paved the way for a culture embracing outdoor hockey.
