Final win aids NCAA tournament chances

As head coach Suzy Merchant walked to the podium for her weekly press conference on Monday, it was with a big smile that hasn’t always been there each week. The MSU women’s basketball team (19-10 overall, 11-5 Big Ten) finished the regular season with a 76-57 victory over Northwestern yesterday — the Spartans’ seventh win in the past eight games — and has overcome an earlier four-game losing streak to finish in a four-way tie for second-place in the Big Ten.

Israel miscast as Gaza instigator

In “Don’t ignore Israel’s wrongdoings,” (SN 2/23) Mr. Goldsmith takes the time to provide sources by inherently biased organizations, and then to provide his minuscule view of a complicated situation.

Romney displays true leadership

Today, Michiganians will go to the polls and vote for their party’s Presidential nominee. Republicans have four very different candidates to choose from, but Michigan would do well to support the true conservative — former Massachusetts Gov.

Women's basketball fights through season, finishes on high note

One month ago today, not many people could have seen this day coming. It was Jan. 26, and the MSU women’s basketball team (19-10 overall, 11-5 Big Ten) suffered a disheartening loss to Illinois — winless in conference play before the day — that extended MSU’s losing streak to four games and made dreams of finishing near the top of the conference seem like just that — dreams. Later that night, senior guard Porschè Poole and freshman guard Kiana Johnson called out their teammates for being selfish, and Poole made sure to meet with head coach Suzy Merchant to find answers. “I definitely think it was a turning point,” Merchant said.

Starting Together

Down on the bench at Munn Ice Arena, Tom Anastos moves from side to side, barking out orders and stressing each detail in an effort to reinvigorate the MSU hockey program. Making a return to his alma mater where he once played and was an assistant coach under Ron Mason, the challenges are many for Anastos in restoring the shine to one of college hockey’s marquee programs.

Students compete in Junkyard Wars challenge

As soon as mechanical engineering senior Adam Sajdak finished addressing about 40 people who had assembled at the IM Sports-West tennis courts on Friday afternoon, the engineers launched into action with gusto, and this year’s Junkyard Wars competition officially began. Each of the seven competing teams was given a 4-by-4 sheet of plywood and an 8-foot length of 2-by-4 to start, along with a drill, four wheels, as many screws or nails as needed and a shared circular saw. The objective was to build a cart to hold two 70-pound sandbags in about an hour and a half. The cart then was pushed through a slalom course in a relay race, and a head-to-head tournament decided the winner.

Gas prices continue to rise in Michigan, other states

When Olivia Martin’s family drives back home to Oxford, Mich., after spending time in sunny Florida next week, the relaxation of spring break quickly might turn to sticker shock. The U.S. national average for a gallon of gasoline currently hovers around $3.64, according to GasBuddy.com — up about 30 cents from one year ago — and might increase further, analysts predict. In Michigan, prices average about 4 cents higher.

Nonprofit encourages ‘passing it forward’

Megan Brophy was home for the summer when it first happened one morning, waiting in line at a McDonald’s drive-thru. When she pulled up to the window, the cashier said her breakfast had been paid for by the woman in the car ahead. The woman had also left a special message: “Pass it forward.”
