South Neighborhood celebrates Brazilian culture with week of events

To spread culture from one nation to another, eight Brazilian exchange students organized a week of activities to share music, food and history with MSU students and faculty members. As part of the Brazil Partnership Program scholarship, exchange student Marina Santos said she and seven others were asked to host a week of events in South Neighborhood to give the MSU community an authentic Brazilian feel.

Pranked students get spooked on M.A.C Avenue

A perceived prank with a $100 bill attached to a string went awry Tuesday night when an unidentified man reportedly jumped out of the bushes near an East Lansing church. A victim told police they noticed a $100 bill on the sidewalk near St. John Church and Student Center, 327 M.A.C. Ave., East Lansing police Capt. Jeff Murphy said.

Evans has no regrets after leaving Vanderbilt

In her third year of college, Kirsten Evans is in her first as a Spartan. Out of high school, the redshirt sophomore midfielder committed to the Vanderbilt women’s soccer team. Because of an injury after just six games into her freshman year, she was sidelined the remainder of the season. After being redshirted in 2012, the Farmington Hills, Mich., native left Nashville and transferred to MSU at the winter break, joining the Spartan women’s soccer team this spring.

Thomas remaining positive after slow start to MSU career

Death, taxes and answering questions about Lawrence “LT” Thomas. At this point, those are the certainties in the life of head coach Mark Dantonio. After answering at least one question about the sophomore defensive end almost weekly since the season began, it’s become a practice as steady and consistent as clockwork for Dantonio. Since Thomas suffered an undisclosed injury during summer workouts, there’s been an insatiable thirst to know the status of the former five-star prospect from Detroit.

False alarm evacuates Union

An alleged fire that occurred at about 2:05 p.m. Tuesday in the Union turned out to be a false alarm, according to East Lansing Fire Department reports. East Lansing Fire Lt. Dawn Carson said an alarm went off in the building and the problem was resolved before authorities even got to the scene. When the alarm sounded, students were evacuated from the building.

Optional couples registry now available at City Hall

Starting Wednesday, same-sex couples in East Lansing will be able to join in a symbolic union at City Hall if they wish to do so. The registry is completely optional and open to residents of all municipalities. In order to become a part of the registry, couples must fill out a declaration of domestic partnership form.

For the No. 10 MSU volleyball team, the memory of falling to Michigan in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament last year hasn’t faded. The Wolverines ended an MSU season that had been marked by success: defeating three top-10 teams, finishing No. 16 in the AVCA coaches poll, knocking off defending national champion UCLA in the tournament, and winning 25 matches — the program’s highest win total since 1996. Senior setter Kristen Kelsay said the feeling of defeat has been burning for the team since the Sweet Sixteen loss.

Men's basketball looking to secure Final Four run

It was a regular August day when men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo popped into a weight lifting session to check on his team, and walked away with a lasting message from a former great. The player was Draymond Green, who spent much of his summer in East Lansing working out with the squad, and the message sheds light on just how high the expectations are for the No. 2-ranked Spartans in the 2013-14 season. “Day-Day came over and said to me, ‘Coach, I’d die to play with this team,’” Izzo said. “From Draymond Green, that was a statement of all statements.”

Eli Broad College of Business adds new online masters program

The Eli Broad College of Business has launched a new online Master of Science in Management, Strategy and Leadership geared toward professionals who want to work on their management and communication skills, a move college officials hope will bolster leadership capabilities for professionals. The program aims to help students lead others, think strategically and manage human resources, and is geared toward enhancing the skills of mid-level company managers, said Robert Wiseman, Eli Broad legacy fellow of management and chairperson of the Department of Management.

Police, MSU seeing new attempts at cyber theft

On Friday, Oct. 18, two MSU employees were emailed messages notifying them the information used to directly deposit their paychecks into their bank accounts had been changed. There was one issue — they hadn’t changed them. According to MSU police and IT Services, the employees were the victims of an increasingly nuanced form of electronic fraud known as phishing. Phishing fools users into giving up sensitive personal information by posing as a trusted source.
