MSU reaches goal of doubling study abroad enrollment in China

In 2009, President Barack Obama announced the “100,000 Strong China” initiative with the goal to increase the number of students studying abroad in China.As a response to the initiative, 94 MSU students studied in China during the 2012-13 school year, a number double from the 2010-11 school year.Secretary of State Hilary Clinton launched the initiative in Beijing in 2010 and called upon institutions of higher education to increase their number of students studying in China by 2014.

Head Football Coach Mark Dantonio and the football team signed autographs for fans and other activities occurred at Spartan Stadium during the 12th annual “Meet The Spartans” event on Monday evening."Meet the Spartans" once took place at Meridian Mall in Okemos, but returned to Spartan Stadium for the second year.

Great Lakes Folk Festival comes to East Lansing

The festival included local and national artists specializing in a variety of genres — from jazz to zydeco, an up-tempo kind of music that blends rock-and-roll with blues.mkThe music was accompanied by dancing among audience members, and the 2,400-square-foot dance floor was rarely empty. Festival-goers were encouraged to participate in the waltz hour, zydeco or join instructors teaching various forms of swing dancing.

Latimore said these aquatic hitchhikers, such as zebra mussels and the starry stonewort algae, are transported from one body of water to the next because they essentially hitch a ride on the bottoms of boats.Algae that might have been picked up from Lake Michigan will attach itself to the boat’s underside and fall off in another lake, giving it an opportunity to populate the lake.

Lansing park plays host to BMX state qualifiers

People of all ages came out on Sunday to race their bikes at Gier Park in Lansing for a State Qualifier Race. Capital Area BMX, a non profit organization through USA BMX, hosted the event for participants of all ages.

Sophomore creates video to welcome international students during orientation

Being encompassed by new surroundings and overcoming jet lag can be overwhelming, but one student is looking to make orientation for international students more welcoming. Her name is Rachel Poole. She’s a social relations and policy sophomore who is spearheading an effort to encourage new international students.Poole came up with the idea to collect photographs of students, faculty and staff holding signs with inspiring sayings in different languages. The photographs will then be compiled into a video and shared on Aug. 15 during international orientation.

Students, residents welcome opening of Apple Store in Lansing

An Apple Store has finally come to the Lansing area. Shoppers lined up outside the entrance Saturday morning at Eastwood Towne Center, anxiously waiting for the store’s grand opening at 10 a.m. The first 1,000 customers were given a free T-shirt. The Apple Store offers free workshops to customers so they can learn how to get the best use out of their Apple product, and those who need repairs can bring their product to the store for technical support.
