A historic week for MSU golfer Jack Newman ended Friday after he fell three strokes short of making the cut at the Masters in Augusta, Ga. Newman, a junior on the MSU men’s golf team, shot a four-over-par 76 in his second round, leaving him four over par through two rounds. The cut was one over par.

MSU junior golfer Jack Newman opens play in the first round of the Masters is in Augusta, Ga., which begins today. On Tuesday, the pairings were announced for the first two days of the tournament. Newman will be playing with PGA Tour veterans Rocco Mediate and Fred Couples.

Spartans come back to win Fossum

The No. 24 MSU women’s golf team came back from five strokes down Sunday to upset No. 19 Kent State and win the Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course. The Spartans — who shot 25 over par and trailed Kent State, 20 over par, and Notre Dame, 24 over par, after 36 holes — won by the slimmest of margins, requiring two tiebreakers to prevail.

As a Spartan, junior golfer Jack Newman has plenty of green attire in his closet. But now the 20-year-old has the opportunity to win golf’s ultimate green article of clothing — the fabled green jacket, which is given to the winner of the Masters Tournament.
