On Friday, the College Sports Information Directors of America selected senior women’s golfer Caroline Powers for the 2013 Capital One Division 1 Academic All-America At-Large Second Team.
Two former MSU men’s golfers Matt Harmon and Randall Hutchison qualified for the 2013 U.S. Open at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., taking place June 13-16. Harmon and Hutchison were among eight golfers who qualified at the sectional qualifying site Monday in Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.

One of the more under-the-radar Spartan athletes in 2011-12 was also one of the most successful. Junior golfer Caroline Powers has amassed an exemplary career in three years in East Lansing, even being called “one of the best athletes at Michigan State,” by her coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll.
MSU announced Monday that former basketball forward Draymond Green was chosen as the 2011-12 George Alderton Male Athlete of the Year, while women’s soccer forward Laura Heyboer and golfer Caroline Powers shared the George Alderton Female Co-Athlete of the Year honors.
Two MSU women’s golfers were honored by the National Golf Coaches Association, or NGCA, this week for their performances in the 2012 season that helped the Spartans win their second consecutive Big Ten championship and earn a berth in the NCAA Championship. Junior Caroline Powers was chosen as an honorable mention All-American for the second time in two years.
When the men’s and women’s golf teams travel to French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind., this weekend for the Big Ten Championships, they’ll both have winning as a common goal.

MSU junior Caroline Powers was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday, after turning in a school-record 54-hole score on Oct. 9 at the Tar Heel Invitational.
The MSU men’s golf team finished up its competition Tuesday at the 2011 Rees Jones Invitational, finishing in a tie for ninth at the Rees Jones signature course at Haig Point Golf Club at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

In a field that included Big Ten rivals Michigan and Ohio State at the Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course, the Spartans won their first tournament of the season in convincing fashion with a 15-stroke victory.
The women’s team finished day two of three at the Texas A&M “Mo”morial at 49-over par, good for 10th out of 12 teams.
