Michigan legislators still unsure of vote on Medicaid expansion

As pressure mounts from both sides of the political spectrum to address Medicaid expansion in Michigan, it is uncertain whether legislators will be addressing the concern at their upcoming Wednesday session. Before breaking for the summer, members of the Michigan Senate began debating the merits of Healthy Michigan, a Medicare expansion plan that would cover more than 400,000 Michigan residents.

Video story: Lansing science program extends education through summer

When school is out and summer hits, some kids drop their books and run to the television, while some turn to science. The latter study at Summer L.A.B.S. “Summer L.A.B.S. is a program that we run every summer here at Impression 5 Science Center, and (it’s) learning about basic science,” Toni Daymon, operations coordinator at Impression 5 Science Center, said. “We take a bunch of different kids here and we teach them different topics dealing with science. We may be talking about recycling or we may be talking about rocks, and the next day it could all be about chemistry.”

Famous Dave's opens up new restaurant in Lansing area

There are places to eat, and then there are places to dine. Famous Dave’s in Holt, Mich., is looking to be the latter. Famous Dave’s opened its Lansing area location on Monday morning, at 2457 N. Cedar St. The location is the ninth in Michigan and the first in the Lansing area.

Max’s Race raises money for hurting families

The ninth annual Max’s Race was held Saturday outside the MSU Auditorium for the benefit of children and families dealing with illness. The 5k race collected an estimated $8,500 for the Maxwell C. Matthews Foundation, adding to the $121,500 already collected, according to Natalie Matthews. “It makes me feel empowered that there’s nothing we can’t do to help kids and families in Sparrow,” she said.

Tips to avoid being caught in phishing scams

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Or at least when it comes to phishing, an online scam that involves the use of emails appearing to be from a trusted source. These scams range anywhere from job offers that are a little too convenient to a free iPad, and students can be easy targets for these scammers.

State Reps. announces Freedom To Marry legislative package

As the Supreme Court gears up to announce its decisions on two key cases involving marriage equality, the legality of the Defense of Marriage Act and the fate of Proposition 8 in California, several members of the Michigan House of Representatives stood outside the Capitol in Lansing today to discuss their plans to make Michigan an accepting place for LGBT Michiganians.

ELPD arrest man for embezzling from local elementary school

On Friday, 47-year-old East Lansing resident Robert Miller was charged with one felony count of embezzlement from the Pinecrest Elementary Parent Teacher Council, or PTC. At the time, Miller was treasurer on the council and upon investigation was found to have embezzled more than $7,700 over the past year, according to East Lansing Police Department, or ELPD, Lt. Scott Wriggelsworth.

Lansing Beer Week events promote Michigan beer

This week, thirsty beer lovers will have a new reason to raise their overflowing glasses. It’s time to celebrate Michigan beer with the second annual Lansing Beer Week that began Friday and concludes on June 29. Paul Starr, the co-creator of Lansing Beer Week, or LBW, said the week is essentially based around different events promoting Michigan beer at various locations throughout Lansing. “(They’re) fun, unique events to get people out and go to places they’ve never been before,” Starr said.
