Students create iPhone, Android app to promote financial literacy
MSU’s Games for Entertainment and Learning Lab, or the GEL Lab, recently released their latest application for iPhone and Android that is aimed at teaching a younger audience responsible financial habits. The lab partnered with MSU Federal Credit Union to create Saving Magic, an app in which players control a wizard-in-training protagonist who battles dragons that are stealing magic while collecting coins along the way.

Police crack down on drunk driving
A drunk driving crackdown in late August yielded more than 260 arrests throughout Michigan — including 45 drivers with a blood alcohol content of .17 or higher, according to an Office of Highway Safety Planning, or OHSP, press release. “Enforcement efforts like this save lives by putting extra officers on the road to stop and arrest impaired drivers and prevent other dangerous driving behaviors,” said Michael Prince, director of the OHSP in the press release. There were eight traffic deaths during Labor Day weekend, according to Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center.

Man accused of East Lansing sexual assaults has first court appearance
The man accused of four sexual assaults in East Lansing made his first court appearance Tuesday and will soon face testimony from all four of his alleged victims. Wilder, 26, is accused of initiating four sexual attacks near MSU’s campus between March 30 and May 16. He appeared for his pretrial conference before 54-B District Court Judge Andrea Larkin Tuesday morning.

The man who police believe initiated four sexual assaults near MSU this summer reportedly was influenced by crack cocaine and sexual fantasy abuse videos to stalk his victims in a local Meijer and later assault them, according to police reports obtained by The State News.

Nearly $40,000 donated to cancer research fund since U-M skywriting stunt
The total donations toward the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance is nearing $40,000 in response to the “Go Blue” skywriting prior to the MSU v. Youngstown State football game. Pam Dahlmann, president of MiOCA, said $39,684 has been received from more than 1,000 donors worldwide, as of Monday afternoon.

Impact 89FM looking to install texting request system
MSU’s student radio station Impact 89FM is considering the use of a new technology that could update the way listeners communicate with the station. Impact program The Vibe, which features a mix of hip-hop, rap, R&B, soul, funk and reggae, currently is conducting a trial run of a text messaging service that will allow students to text their requests to Impact’s landline.

E.L. Film Festival holds Five Days/Five Minutes short film contest
