Sisters turn love for cheer into new career

In a world where many children choose their values from TV shows, Carla Colbeck and her sister, Laura Colbeck, said they take it upon themselves to get their athletes involved. Two weeks after finding the ideal location, the Colbeck sisters opened the doors in late September of the Capital Cheer Training Facility, 3125B Pine Tree Road, in Lansing. The facility is home to the Capital Cheer All Stars LLC, which Carla Colbeck — who graduated in 2007 with a degree in business management — founded during her sophomore year at MSU.

Jobless rate in Mich. climbs to 9.3 percent

Michigan recorded its highest unemployment rate in 16 years in October, reaching 9.3 percent as the state’s manufacturing sector continues to free fall. The unemployment rate for October of 2007 was 7.5 percent in Michigan, and 8.7 percent in September.

Sudden snowfall brings danger to Lansing area travelers

A number of traffic accidents struck Mid-Michigan during this weekend’s snowfall, East Lansing police Sgt. Mike Phillips said. There typically are an increased number of crashes when snow and ice descend on the roads, he said. “People haven’t adjusted their driving style — they keep their speeds,” Phillips said.

Cold weather belated, still detours everyday travel

East Lansing residents might need to start digging out their shovels and winter coats this week. While most areas reported an inch of snowfall, Okemos received about 2.2 inches. The snowstorms that hit the West Coast last week are not connected to the storm that hit the Lansing area, said Rob Dale, a meteorologist for WLNS Channel 6.

Businesses prepare for seasonal sales

As students prepare for the holiday shopping season, they can expect lower price tags and a stronger emphasis on theft prevention in stores. Holiday sales have already begun at several corporate stores, including Wal-Mart, which is offering a new sale each week up until Christmas to keep up with the tough economic times, according to a Wal-Mart press release.

EPA takes lead in air quality protection

When the Environmental Protection Agency says “get the lead out,” they mean it. A little more than two weeks ago, the EPA cut the amount of lead emissions allowed in the air by 90 percent, from 1.5 micrograms per cubic meter of air (ug/m3) to .15 ug/m3, according to a statement from the EPA.

Recent warm weather not indication of global warming

East Lansing residents are enjoying the warm weather today, with the average temperature about 20 degrees higher than the historical average of 50 degrees. Meteorologists said a low pressure front is moving in from the west and is pushing warm air through the Midwest.
