Forensics course recreates human faces

A pair of green eyes stared blankly at Jane Wankmiller as the anthropology doctoral student aimed her camera at the black man’s face. Flashes of light from her camera momentarily illuminated the lifeless eyes, but they did not blink. She examined the face one last time before she tugged one of the ears, watching as it peeled away from the skull she spent the past eight weeks transforming into a facial reconstruction of a deceased person.

In a continuing effort to combat violent crime, the U.S. Department of Justice awarded MSU’s School of Criminal Justice $1 million to extend research into training techniques and technical assistance for the Drug Market Intervention, or DMI, program.

MSU professor to oversee plant gene research

For Dean DellaPenna, researching medicinal plant genes is like working with a giant puzzle. DellaPenna, an MSU biochemistry professor, will oversee research at MSU looking at gene expression in plants to determine which genes create the biochemical compounds used for medical purposes.

Marketing seniors gain hands-on experience

When Erin Luytjes graduates from MSU in December, the marketing senior’s résumé will include professional experience from an unlikely source: an MSU classroom. Eleven marketing senior students, including Luytjes, who enrolled in section three of Marketing 460 this semester created a marketing campaign for the 2010 Honda Insight, a hybrid vehicle produced by Honda Motor Co. Instead of a December final exam, the students will compete against teams from about 20 U.S. schools in the 2010 Honda Insight Marketing Competition for an opportunity to pitch their campaign to company executives later this year.
