Olin health advocates provide sex ed

Condoms aren’t something most students are comfortable picking up in public and sexually transmitted infections, or STIs, aren’t something they necessarily want the world to know for what they’re being tested. That’s where Olin Health Center’s student health advocates come in, said dietetics junior Ashley Hilbert, an Olin Health advocate. Advocates set up a booth in the Union on Wednesday to engage students in sexual education-related activities, trivia and games to recognize National STI Awareness Month.

Presentation addresses suicide

On Wednesday evening, Dennis Liegghio, the executive director of NoResolve.org, held his Know Resolve presentation at the Engineering Building. Liegghio, who was 14 years old when his father committed suicide, said the nonprofit organization’s goal is to promote the idea of hope after the loss of a loved one though coping skills and resilience.

OCAT hosts fashion show for diversity

As an Office of Cultural and Academic Transitions, or OCAT, aide in Rather Hall this year, Brent Mitchell noticed cliques based on race forming in his hall. Mitchell helped create the Trends From All Ends fashion show held Wednesday night in Rather Hall. The show featured OCAT aides from Brody Complex, as well as about 50 students sharing their culture before a crowd of about 40.

MSU Safe Place in running for grant

MSU Safe Place is in the running for a $25,000 grant and students can vote online to help survivors of domestic violence. The grant, funded through the Pepsi Refresh Project, would support MSU Safe Place in its efforts to help survivors of domestic violence and stalking.

Greeks focus on local community

The MTV Fundraising Night, which was held Wednesday in the Auditorium, attracted hundreds of fraternity and sorority members and their friends and family to watch teams dance in the competition. The event is part of the greek community’s annual Greek Week.

MSU center to host event on inequality

MSU’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies will hold a two-day event allowing students to examine issues of inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean from April 21-22. The event, which is called Regional Inequality in Times of Globalization, will be held at the International Center.

Small Animals day set for next week

The MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Student Senate will host Small Animals Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 17 at the MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education. The event will offer face-painting, a sheep dog demonstration, educational booths by other MSU student organizations and more.

Tornado warning lowers attendance

Some students, such as human biology and psychology freshman Jessica Jary, missed class Tuesday because of a tornado warning, which lasted from 11:23 a.m. to noon Tuesday according to the National Weather Service.

Award-winning playwright speaks with MSU students

Suzan-Lori Parks, author of various plays, such as the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Topdog/Underdog,” came to MSU on Tuesday to discuss her works and career before a crowd of about 300. In 2002, Parks became the first African-American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize in drama for her play.

Poetry festival offers creative experiences

Courtney Hilden spends about four hours of her week with the likes of Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Ann Plato and Frances Harper — a lost generation of female poets of whom most in the world of academia have never heard. Hilden, however, thinks these women still have a story to tell and a part to play. The English senior will give a presentation on her senior thesis this month — a study of 19th century politically active women poets — as a part of the Center for Poetry’s Spring Poetry Festival.

Event aims to address different forms of oppression

It is similar to a haunted house, except the realities students will face inside the Tunnel of Oppression are far scarier than monsters and ghosts. The Tunnel of Oppression, a performance meant to address various types of oppression found throughout the world, will be performed at 6, 7 and 8 p.m.

Food writer to speak next week

Author and food writer Michael Pollan will discuss the challenges facing the American food system with MSU students from 3-4 p.m. Monday in Room C-102 in Wilson Hall. Pollan is the featured speaker at the World View Series presented by Wharton Center. He is the Knight Professor of Journalism at the University of California-Berkeley.

Melting Moments to seek new location

After 26 years in its 313 E. Grand River Ave. home, Melting Moments’ owner has closed its retail operation to focus on its vending sales. Owner Mark Geovjian said a physical store didn’t make financial sense, adding the place was too large for the small share of company’s business it provided.
