Phi Sigma Pi hosts panel discussion to address bullying concerns, solutions

In 2002, East Lansing resident Kevin Epling dealt with a tragedy few can dream of: his son’s choice to take his own life. Epling discussed bullying, which led to his son Matt’s mental distress and eventual suicide, in a panel discussion Monday evening in the Engineering Building. The event was hosted by the national coed honors fraternity Phi Sigma Pi.

Students take care of business during spring break

After spending a week relaxing and lying on a Florida beach during her spring break two years ago, Erica Swoish felt like she got nothing out of her vacation. So last year, when the communication junior heard about a program that would help her explore a number of businesses in her future career field, she jumped at the chance.

Flint, Mich. resident Terrance Lewis, 21, was arrested on counts of felony and domestic violence that allegedly occurred between 2:30-3:30 p.m. Feb. 21 in the parking lot of Olin Health Center, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Japanese doll collection on display

Five large wooden crates filled with more than 70 traditional Japanese dolls all neatly packed up arrived at MSU last Wednesday after visiting the Dominican Republic as part of a worldwide tour.

New candidates compete for trustee positions

Two additional candidates are vying for seats on the MSU Board of Trustees in this year’s election. Democrat Brian Mosallam, a financial adviser for Dearborn-based AXA Advisors, and Republican Jeff Sakwa, a real estate broker from Farmington Hills, Mich., are joining current trustees Joel Ferguson and Melanie Foster in the race for trustee seats.

Residents to vote today on proposed E.L. elementary school bond

East Lansing residents will head to the polls today with the fate of the city’s school system hanging in the balance and a $53 million bond proposal on the ballot. The proposal would renovate and reconfigure five of the city’s six elementary schools, an issue that has drawn both heated criticism and strong support from community members, including MSU faculty with children in East Lansing schools.

New online summer course teaches zombie survival

This summer, zombies are coming to terrorize MSU. As a component of Glenn Stutzky’s new online course beginning this summer, “Surviving the Coming Zombie Apocalypse: Catastrophe & Human Behavior,” students will be divided into survivor groups where they have to solve problems and perform activities related to a hypothetical zombie invasion.

FRIB funding controversial among legislators

Since the federal proposal to cut funding to $22 million from the original $55 million in committed funding for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, or FRIB, earlier this month, several legislative voices are crying out to show continued support for the project.

Students compete in Junkyard Wars challenge

As soon as mechanical engineering senior Adam Sajdak finished addressing about 40 people who had assembled at the IM Sports-West tennis courts on Friday afternoon, the engineers launched into action with gusto, and this year’s Junkyard Wars competition officially began. Each of the seven competing teams was given a 4-by-4 sheet of plywood and an 8-foot length of 2-by-4 to start, along with a drill, four wheels, as many screws or nails as needed and a shared circular saw. The objective was to build a cart to hold two 70-pound sandbags in about an hour and a half. The cart then was pushed through a slalom course in a relay race, and a head-to-head tournament decided the winner.

Gas prices continue to rise in Michigan, other states

When Olivia Martin’s family drives back home to Oxford, Mich., after spending time in sunny Florida next week, the relaxation of spring break quickly might turn to sticker shock. The U.S. national average for a gallon of gasoline currently hovers around $3.64, according to GasBuddy.com — up about 30 cents from one year ago — and might increase further, analysts predict. In Michigan, prices average about 4 cents higher.

Nonprofit encourages ‘passing it forward’

Megan Brophy was home for the summer when it first happened one morning, waiting in line at a McDonald’s drive-thru. When she pulled up to the window, the cashier said her breakfast had been paid for by the woman in the car ahead. The woman had also left a special message: “Pass it forward.”

Alleged murderer David Marion Jr.'s pretrial continues

A pretrial to determine whether a police interrogation of alleged murderer David Marion Jr. could be counted as evidence continued Friday in Lansing’s 30th Circuit Court with testimony from a Michigan State Police officer. Marion has been charged with conspiring to kill Lansing resident Owen Goodenow in the process of stealing a safe containing money and marijuana inside the home, as well as killing Goodenow’s roommate, MSU student Darren Brown.

MSU Underwater Hockey Team hosts tournament Sunday

With fins flapping and water splashing, underwater hockey players from 10 different colleges and cities competed for fun and glory this weekend in MSU’s 12th annual Tournament of Love, held at IM Sports-West. In underwater hockey, players drop a 3-pound puck to the bottom of a pool and use small sticks to push the puck into the opposing team’s goal.
